Skinny front radials, part 2

Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/16/15 01:34 AM

I'm having a terrible time deciding which tire to buy, only because I want the TALLEST one and with all the weird actual numbers you hear about with these front radial tires it's hard to decide. I have a 15x4" wheel and I have a Duster so I have to stick with a 26" tire, I run a 275/60/15 radial on the back. My Sportsman front tires only measure 80" in circumference, I'd love to find something that truly is 81" or slightly bigger. I could take a tape measure to Summit and check out all 3 tires but they won't be mounted so the measurements may be useless.?
Info I've gathered so far........

Hoosier #19050 is 80.5" circumference, $204 each and are in stock at Summit. I'd love to measure a mounted set of these to see what the actual circumference is.

M&H #ROD02 is 81.7" circumference, $182 each and are in stock at Summit. To me the tread kinda looks like a dirt track tread but I've heard people say they look good like a drag tire.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mnh-rod02

M/T #6652 is advertised as 81.6" circumference but I'm doubting that since everyone says they're about 25.25" tall and that's how tall my Sportsmans are, and they are only 80" in circumference.
They are in stock at Summit and cost $188.73 each.

Do any of you guys own any of these tires?

I like the M&H, I might do those with the 4" steel wheels on my Valiant

When I was googling, I saw a couple guys mention that the M&H tires drove really nice on the street.

My 26" M/T Sportsmans are awful, they are like a motorcycle tire and try to follow every little crack in the road.

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/16/15 01:56 PM

That's the size I bought and mounted, they were ginormous on a Duster, wouldn't even fit on the car, they hit fenders when turning. They were Cooper brand. They were listed as 26.98 tall and that's what they measured.

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/16/15 03:21 PM

The 205/70/15 is 26.28" tall so it might fit better, I just don't think the 8.11" section width will look good on a 4" rim. I do not race this car but I like the looks of skinny front tire.

I would bet the 195 is a little too tall to fit a Duster but I wouldn't know for sure til I measured one mounted. Plus they are $146 and up so I may as well get one of the 3 I mentioned in the first post of this thread. It's worth looking into though, thanks.

Bob,
The MT's measure 25 1/2" tall an the circumference is approximately 80 1/2" on the 4" rim. He has a 69 Barracuda and they look good. Hope this helps

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/16/15 11:08 PM

it's a street car - why run a skinny up front? go to a wider rim and put some wider tires up front - it will handle much better and be a bunch safer stopping

Thanks! I'm glad to hear they're not shorter than my sportsmans, they're actually a tad taller.

Dave it's just my preference for looks. My next build is gonna be a pro-touring car with 4 fat tires and a 5 speed.

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/17/15 08:03 AM

Dont know if this will help Bob but as you said many 15" tires will rub on turns on the front of an A-body. So we actually have 205/70-14's up front on my sons Dart and we have ran them on it since 1997 when I put it on the road. They work fine with the 15's we run in the back as it drives and handles great. Ron

Here is a pic from the front also. Good luck on which ever tires you go with. Ron

Ron, how wide is your front rim? Mine is only 4". Those tires do look good.

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/17/15 02:56 PM

If I were to sell my new 4" wheels with the M/T sportsmans I could buy 6" Qualifier wheels and run the 205/70/15 tires which are 26.28" tall, but it would suck if I ended up not liking the looks of the bigger wheel. It would have the same offset on the outside of the wheel though.

You know they are a factory ralley wheel but they have been on the car so long I dont remember the size. But I think they were a 5" wide ralley wheel ? Ron

Re: Skinny front radials, part 2 - 11/18/15 01:23 AM

I think for this car I'm gonna stick with the 4" rim and buy the M&H 26" radials. I'm gonna buy tires friday so I'll probably change my mind 10 times! Our local roads suck, a wider tire and rim would drive better but I just love the looks of the skinnier tires on this car.

I dont blame you Bob as your car is more of the Pro Street look then my sons as his Darts body is all stock and its not tubbed or anything. I think yours will look best the way you are doing it. Course it looks great to me right now. up Ron

Thanks Ron, my car isn't tubbed or caged or anything, the leaf springs are even in the stock location. Dusters are nice cuz you can run a 275/60 on the back with no modifications. But I love the drag car look, since that's what I've been around my whole life.

Oh I for some reason thought it was tubbed. realcrazy But you are right as its nice how the Duster/Demon and the Dart Sport and 67 to 69 Cuda's fit the bigger tire then the standard Dart wheelwell will fit. Ron

I need a 26" tire to keep my oil pan a safe distance from the ground. I haven't seen any 165's that will go 26" unless you know of a brand. They're advertised as 25 ".

Thanks Gus, I have a shop near my house that does them at a fair price so I should be ok. The alignment you did is still working perfect!

Yea that was a cool Demon, I was sad when I heard something happened to it. But the D50 looks like a fun ride too!

Yes that's one of the 3 I mentioned. It's 25.5" tall, I'm trying to find out if the M&H is a true 26" or not.
