440 Thrust bearing problem

440 Thrust bearing problem - 11/03/15 02:44 AM

I'm rebuilding a 1970 440 block and ran into a problem with the thrust bearing. It looks to me that the side edges of the bearing are too large and the bearing will not seat properly. the machined groves in the block and the cap are smaller than the the surface of the bearing.
I crank doesn't drop into the bearing at all.
The bearings are standard size sealed power from a summit kit.

any help would be welcome,.

Thanks
Ron

sounds like you have the cast crank bearing with the wider flanges and need the forged crank bearing with narrower flanges.

That makes a lot of sense. I didn't know that there was a difference.

Thanks

There are 2 different thrust bearing sizes, depending on the year of the block. http://www.440source.com/bearings.htm

Thanks for the info.
I'm learning one mistake at a time.

Yes, it has nothing to do with the crank and everything to do with how the block was machined, early or late. Smallblocks have the same issue.

As thrust bearings see more stressed than the other main bearings, could be that someone would want it. Put it in the "For Sale" section.
