Surface prep suggestions for Belzona 1111? - 10/20/15 09:12 PM

I'm looking at buying some Belzona 1111 "Super Metal" for use primarily on/in intake manifolds. What sort of surface prep is required to ensure adhesion? Thanks - Brad

There's the instructions.

I've used the stuff for years. Basically I'd want a SSPC-SP9 or SSPC-SP10 surface with some tooth, profile around 0.002".

With Belzona surface prep is key and it can't be too clean. If sandblasting, use either real blasting sand or preferably copper slag sometimes called "Black Beauty". Blasting with round sand can burnish the surface and that's not good.

Oh, yeah, clean is an absolute necessity. My question has more to do w/ the surface texture needed for the Belzona to grab on "forever".

I've used sharp punches to dig "foot holds" into aluminum for other epoxies, and have also seen where people have used aluma-cut burs to create a rough surface w/ the same intent. hammer & sawzall

I like a 2-3 mil finish or profile. Using this, the Belzona stayed on inside a hydro turbine.

There must be someone in your area that can get this result. Our painters used to do it. The abrasive is the most critical element.

Good Luck!
