Single springs w/damper with Lunati 60304 cam? - 10/05/15 10:23 PM

Hi,
I want to slightly upgrade the cam in my mild 493 stroker. I had all comp cams components (XE274L) but want to get a Lunati voodoo 60304/1023704 cam. Lunati suggests a single w/damper spring for their cam. Can anyone tell me if my current comp 911 springs will be ok? The specs seem similar.
I really want to stay with a single spring as I don't want to machine the heads.
Rocker ratio is 1.5, Comp Pro Magnum steel ones.

To the top. Curious if anyone has any thoughts about this as well.

Yes, depending on the spring. A comp 924 or another spring with the same specs will work.

Specs for recommended Lunati 73815 are:
Type: Single With Damper
O.D. Outer: 1.500"
I.D. Outer: 1.086"
I.D. Inner: N/A
Coil Bind: 1.094"
Seat Load: 120 @ 1.820"
Open Load: 315 @ 1.250"
Rate (lbs/in): 342

Specs of my current Compcams 911 are
Type: Single With Damper
O.D. Outer: 1.524"
I.D. Outer: 1.110"
I.D. Inner: N/A
Coil Bind: 1.200"
Seat Load: 122 @ 1.900"
Open Load: 309 @ 1.400"
Rate (lbs/in): 373

Each one be installed at its recommended height, Lunati at 1.820", Comp at 1.900".
If I calculate the Lunati springs for 0.500" valve lift (1.320") I get 291 lbs. So the Lunati springs are a bit weaker than the Compcams. Thats the main difference that I can see. Any comments?

The 911 is a pretty good universal spring for almost any off the shelf hydraulic, its more pressure than Lunati says you need, so its just a little more wear on parts, and a little higher risk of flattening a cam lobe, but its a negligible difference. TBH I would rather run those 911s than the Lunati springs on any cam, you don't want to/can't shim that spring up that much (thickest spring shim you will probably find to work will be .060), and I dont know if anyone make -.050 installed height locks. I'd keep the 911s, you'll be fine.

FYI I dont know what heads you've got but most stock and stock replacement heads are around 1.88-1.90 spring height.

Heads are Mopar Stage V iron heads, which are similar to 906 heads.
IIRC the installed height was around 1.88 when I measured them years ago.
