Cool deal on Indy's website

Cool deal on Indy's website - 07/05/15 08:13 PM

So I wanted to look up a water manifold remembering Indy used to make one for the big blocks and I came across this in the clearance section:

http://www.indyheads.com/overstock.html

Stage VI heads and intake for $795. Looks like a deal of a lifetime to me. Thought I would pass it along for anyone wanting to upgrade to aluminum heads. Pic shows bare heads, but it seems like a great starting point.

So it may seem like a deal. Better plan on spending another $1500+ for
1. Porting that is an absolute must (unless you want peformance lower than factory iron heads offer)
2. Valves and valve job
3. Rocker stands
4. Miscellaneous machine work to correct various issues
5. Offset intake rockers
We have built a set of those, in the end you will wish you would have went a different route!
But the reputation Indy has combined with the reputation the MP Stage 6 has I think most people would know to pass

Not sure I agree with your assessment...:
1. my bone stock Stage 6's were way lighter than my 906's and they flowed better out of the box
2. yes, if these heads re bare they will need valves and a valve job,
3. Rocker stands? Mine have "stock" rocker stands and accepted stock rocker gear...still do.
4. maybe I was lucky but mine needed no "various" issues corrected...yes...I've read all over the internet and on this site how bad some people and found them to be but mine may be the exception???
5. Offset rockers not required for Stage 6's
Bottom line I would think it doesn't sound like that bad of a deal to me...and as I side note I made 782 hp with mine on a 499 low deck stroker, ran them for over 10 years and they are now sitting on my shelf waiting on the next project. my 2 cents. Yes, they have been ported...twice as a matter of fact, once by Muscle Motors and the second time by a small independent shop.

What do they flow, after the port work? Any idea what the flow potential is?

The reason you don't agree with my assessment is because I posted due to my experience with one of the sets that somebody bought from Indy cylinder head and not a broad generalization of the stage 6. And yes the ports as cast were substantially smaller than any factory iron head, rocker pedestals were machined off flat and the pushrod opening required an offset intake rocker.

Don't know what they flowed when I originally bought them from
muscle motors, but at the time I was moving from ported 906's to the stage 6's (mid 90's) and they picked me up from 5.50's to 5.30's in a stock stroke 440 in a hard tail dragster. Port job II was done by a small shop in Dallas that specialized in small block chevy's, he gave me a piece of notebook paper back then that had flow numbers on it...he was claiming on the paper that he flowed them to 341...is that possible? I won't argue yea or nay, all I can say is that they went on my 499 low deck in my hard tail dragster and ran 4.80's at 140 for years, now they are sitting on my shelf, still don't require off set rockers and the rocker stands are intact...quit bracket racing so they are waiting for a good street build. Dwayne Porter is the most experienced person I have heard of on these heads and I would love to send mine to him for evaluation but just haven't done it yet.

That is a good price if those castings are in good shape. I got burned a bit by the Stage VI casting issues years ago and so I probably won't go wading back in that pool again.

I purchased a set from Indy about a year ago. They didn't have the intakes as listed in the ad, so I bought one from another source. These castings are machined minimally into the ports, so they need extensive (and expensive) porting, plus valves, rocker gear etc. I chose the standard(non Max Wedge)intake with a 4150 carb flange. I might not use this stuff, pm me if interested, also I could deliver to Carisle

Most likely these are low qc cast offs from chapman. These castings have the greatest potential of all the stage 6 heads, if you are willing to do the work.

I guess they're not chapmans. The spring surface is for a standard length valve.

Re: Cool deal on Indy's website - 07/06/15 06:08 PM

Are those unfinished castings or rejects? Don't know why the rocker stands are milled off, either. Those don't look like any of the Stage VI heads I remember Mopar selling. Even for free, they just look like a money pit to me.

I second the above response...those don't look anything like my stage 6s or any that I have ever seen????

There's a reason they're so cheap.
