Question about bronze gears - 01/19/09 03:25 PM
Are the BB bronze distributor gears the same dimensionally as the stock steel(iron?) ones?
Or do roller cams use a different size as well as material?
Market research on my part.
TIA.

I would think they are the same but I dont have a
pair in the shop to measure. I would think the factory
would make them the same due to a cost factor, make
everything the same is easy

I would think so, too, but just thought I'd check on here.
Thanks!

I have found that the drives are the same, that only the shaft is longer on my mag drive (on right)

Yup standard pump standard length. no a big milidon pump has a longer one and a get up hear were the extra line is on a plate between the pump and the block takes a longer one yet

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but, if you run a roller cam, bronze gear and thrust bearing should you machine the block to allow for the thrust bearing. I have had excessive wear on one side of 2 gears now. The old block the gear did not show any signs of wear after many seasons but I don't know if it was machined for thrust bearing.

Thanks for the confirmation, guys! If things pan out, you street guys wanting to run roller BBs will have a better(far more durable than bronze) part soon. One less thing to worry about going that route.

Let me guess....
It will be made of high density plastic.

If you mean the carbon ultra-poly material, yes, that's what I'm looking into. It costs more, but then, it doesn't wear out nearly as quick(if ever). Haven't been serious about it for awhile. Last time I was, I couldn't locate a raw material source. I admittedly didn't look very hard.
Seems to work well for the ford, chevys, pontiacs, buicks, etc that they're otherwise available for. I realize SB mopars can just use the factory Magnum part for the gear in that application. I'm just surprised noone else has filled the niche already.

I got a piece form a place called poly-tech in North Carolina.
It was about $50 for a 2" piece to make a prototype gear and that was a deal because he had an off cut laying around.
