440 Cam Swap Thoughts

440 Cam Swap Thoughts - 06/13/15 10:07 PM

Hey guys I'm looking to get some thoughts on doing a potential cam swap in my truck. I built this truck in college on a shoe string budget. Rather than just building a different engine I'd rather maximize the combo I have at the moment. The truck is mostly a footbrake car but I still like to cruise it to the local car shows or burger joint every once in a while. Call it street and strip...but mostly strip. It's been 7.67 @ 88 mph (1/8th mile) with a 1.63 60ft in the heat so far.

'83 Dodge D150
Motorhome 440 - stock cast crank and rods
KB184 pistons - approximately 9.5:1
Mopar stage 5 iron heads - 77cc, 267/187 CFM at .600
Holley street dominator
Holley 750dp

727 with 8" converter, flashes 3800
I will be swapping back to a 9.5 PTC that flashes 4200 behind this combo at some point.
Dana 60 with 4.10s

The truck is 3800lb with me in it and a full tank of gas.

Current cam is is a Comp XS724
.502/.511 lift.
236/242 at .05
31 IVO, 63 IVC
26 EVO, 74 EVC
Cam is installed straight up.

I think I'm leaving a good bit of ET on the table with the cam that is in it now. I am thinking of having a custom cam ground for this combo.

Think it's worth it and will it pick it up?

Do you want to stay with hydrailic flat lifters? If so I would look at using the Extreme energy high lift XE---HL grinds scope twocents I've used the those cams (the bigger two) with good results in pump gas motors similar to yours up On your deal either the XE285HL or the bigger XE295HL should make the truck 60 ft better and run more MPH on the other end up twocents Both of those cams have lumpy idles, no way I could convince the locals that they where Magnum 6 pak cams whistling shruggy smile

It's actually a solid cam. Those 2 cams look like good candidates.

I see that grind now in the Comp catalog blush shruggyI would go bigger based on your converter choices up Stiffen up the valve spring pressures to 140 to 170 lbs on the seats and shoot for 325 lbs to 375 lbs over the nose, break the new cam in with less pressures than those and see how it runs up twocents Maybe one of the dedicated drag grinds would be a good choice, I like and use grinds with 255 to 270 at .050 on 108 LSA when I run a solid flat tappet cam, installed at 103 to 105 intake lobe centers up I like and use solid roller cams for most of my drag race motors now due to the problems with solid lifters and thier lack of life with todays oils work

Thanks Cab!

I've had the current cam nitrided when I ordered it from Comp. No problems here so far.

Anyone ever drove a MP .590 cam some on them street? I've been reading good results on those in similar weight B bodies. However it might be a tad much for my mild combo.

The cust grind cam from Dwayne Porter I use in my 63 is not real far from the MP .590 as my solid flat tappet that Dwayne did for me is .585 & .592 lift at 264 & 270 @ .050 with a 110 LSA and I have it in my eng on a 106 ICl. And I do use Hughes 1.6 rockers that puts my lift around .630. I drive it on the street all the time as its actually a nice driving car as I use a Dynamic 9.5 converter that flashes about 4200 and I run 4.30's with 30 x 9 rear tires. I love driving it on the street as I drive it alot on the street. Ron

I had Isky`s similar grind w/ .590-.605 lift and drove it for 7 years and sold it to a friend. With proper spring pressures, components and gentle ramps, any cam can be driven on the street imo.

Personally I would give Dwayne Porter a call and have him custom grind one for you, it won't be that much more but well worth it performance wise. If not I like Cab's suggestion on the XL285 cam
