904 fluid leak from tailshaft

904 fluid leak from tailshaft - 04/29/15 05:38 PM

Hey guys I've got a pretty decent leak coming out of the tailshaft of my SS Stratus. Getting trans fluid all over the under side of the car after a pass. I've put a new bushing and seal in it but that didn't change anything. It has a aluminum driveshaft in it with a MW chromemoly yoke. Any ideas?

Is the transmission vented?

I would think vent or a bent tailshaft

Yes it is vented, in fact it had a bid overflow catch can on it and I removed it and installed the typical vent at the rear and top of the case. It didn't seem to slow down the leak.

I had mine vented at the rear of the case but used a sintered type of vent. That caused me hell and leaks. It also made it difficult to get the right amount of fluid in the trans.I changed to a free breathing spring loaded type and it quit leaking and it was easer to check the level. I now have the line going into a catch can and its worked well

Check to balancing of the driveshaft. If it is out, it will ruin the seal.

It's one of those flexible dipsticks. I have tried two different breather setups with no change, and two different rear seals with no change. It starts leaking on it's very first pass.

It can be a over fill issue... I dont know the measured height
of a 904.. but see if you can check that

I was under the car yesterday and rechecked the yoke. It appears to be all intact. I think I will drain the fluid and refill refill it keeping it lower to see if it helps. Maybe it's overfilled?

The dipstick shows the correct level....checked warm while idling in Neutral.

Seems like you have checked all of the usual suspects. Those flexible dip sticks are nortoius for being wrong. I replaced mine on my glide because it was so far off.
