Solid roller or solid flat tappet 528 Hemi?

Time to upgrade came from hydralic to something else I guess after having a lifter fall apart

Ray Barton says solid flat tappet, package he has is streetable for $1100(cam, special lifters,push rods, springs retainers etc. Tim Banning (FHO)says you can make a solid roller live on street.

Don't know which way to go ? Any recomendations ?

Street driven 69 charger 5spd, 3:73 gear. Currently has single 870 cfm dual plane instake.Manual brakes. Want this thing to cam over nicely and sound like a hemi should.

One, you should be posting in a different section, this is the RACE section.

Two, the solid flat tappet is better because all the roller lifters as of late have very high failure rates....IE, lack of quality control. I am sure Barton told you that when you talked with him. If you go roller, better be prepared to send them back for checking regularly or risk a bigger problem.

Sounds like a cruiser for the most part, go with a healthy SFT with a EDM lifter.

Contact Chase Knight from Crane Cams, he put together a solid roller for me that has a wide lobe separation for good idle and pushrod oiling. 242@.050 and .620 lift 112 lsa....but this is on a 572 with low compression. Bullet cams can do something similar depending on all of your specifics. Tim

Wow don`t tell that to the comp solid roller lifters in my old W2 motor, they have by now at least 12.500 street miles and right around 65 1/4 drag strip on them and have never been rebuilt.
The first 5000 miles the cam in the motor was small at .630 lift. The cam that is in it now .700 lift.

Some company`s do have a quality control problem.

Yes there are ways to "make a roller live" and there are bushed rollers for those who want to avoid needle bearings BUT all have a finite life and each have there own set of problems/hassle.

talking about lifters people bought years ago isn't what is being said - there are problems with CURRENT quality - I'm a nobody but I can second what Dragula is saying

I agree as I went with a solid flat tappet cam in my 493 and it was reccomended by "Dwayne Porter". That is why I use a solid flat tappet in my 63 Sport Fury street car. Mine is a custom grind from Dwayne. He does great work. Ron

Ya me too......lots of street miles and several passes in 8 years with one lifter rebuild but everything has a life span just haven't found mine yet and hopefully never will.

If you buy GOOD roller lifters and use good (correct) springs, you shouldn't have any problems. My set of Isky Red Zone solid rollers were new in 2006. I've sent them back to Isky twice since then for inspection and they have not needed anything.

I'd go w/ a solid roller...no doubt about it.

I think I've heard of more flat tappet failures in the last few years than rollers....

Nearly every modern engine on the road today has roller lifters or followers....

Plus, its getting harder to find oil with the right additive package for flat tappet cams in the local auto parts stores.

i did a 528 hemi last year for a friend, i used a hydralic roller cam from comp and lifters !! only down fall was i had to clearance the push rod holes in the heads because the lifters are taller ,xr280hr-10 sounds great , i ran it on a break in stand , he has not driven it yet the car is not done i will up date later this year
