Show me your weight boxes and what you use to fill them with and also where do you place them for best results. If not weight boxes what else do you use. Looking for idea's to add anywhere from 10 lbs to 200 lbs.

Thanks up

Excuse the mess, street car on Drag Week! I ran it in index classes also, and went with the competition engineering weight box/ battery box, mounted on the opposite side of the trunk from the batteries. Had lead shot in bags 25lbs. and some 10lb. steel weights, etc, will easily hold 200lbs.

I use these weights. They are approximately 10 lbs each and are bolted to the rear most trunk floor through the frame rails.
Stuck down the middle of the weights is a T Handle I made to change up to 160 lbs of weight in a couple of minutes.
I bought the complete weight bench setup from Habitat for Humanity for next to nothing for the weights.

I use cases of beer. That's why my car is always faster on Sunday than Saturday.

Used to use weights but two years ago went to the ET Genie http://www.etgenie.com/. Using Crewcheif Pro I am able to adjust the genie to run within a .01 virtually every time. Might be something to look at and is legal in most index classes as it is a manual adjustment done from outside of the car.

Russ,
This is the box I use it's homemade. I can put 8 25 pound bags of lead shot in it.I wouldn't recommend putting more than 150 pounds in the trunk, you may need to reset the suspension plus that extra weight can really slow down how quick your car reacts.

My weight box is a battery box. As you can see, the box weighs 25#. My added weight are bags of tungsten rounds:

Thanks for the idea's guys up . I have always tried to adjust the throttle cable or just played the stripe at top end with the brakes and think now I will try to use weight. Looks like a box with some bags of lead shot and maybe use the trunk and maybe a box where the back seat would be to help spread some of the weight around.

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/21/15 03:26 PM

I use an EZ plate restrictor plate system under each carb. i needed to slow down close to 6 tenths. I went to a weight box as well this year to help. In good air I was restricting the car so much that i had no throttle response at the tree. Obviously bad. So this year i have been working on finding middle ground on the plates and using weight to finish me off to the index.

I "believe" some index racers use the MSD Power Grid and program taking out timing at the start of a run to slow them down. If you look at some of the 60ft times you can see how they slow it down at the start of the run.

Is this legal in NSS, NMCA rules? It's not in Victory NSS series. This is the one thing that can completely foul up NSS or any other non-electronic racing. Heck, as far as I am concerned, it will foul up ALL racing. Not only can you slow up 60 ft times, there is a world of "adjustments" that can be made down track. Read articles about "slew rate" in drag racing.

It is not legal the way I read the rules.

NHRA allowed list has the Grid components listed as prohibited. The NMCA rules say if it is on the NHRA allowed ignition list then you can use it. They checked my ignition at Atlanta NMCA.

66 coronet, that is good to hear. If this is allowed we might as well drag race on a practice tree, races would be decided on the starting line every time.

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/21/15 06:16 PM

Power Grid 7730 is NHRA acceptable, the 7761 and 7762 are NOT acceptable.

The 7730 allows to pull timing out or slew it, but not rpm

And no I don't run one, I'm still running the old MSD 6T nascar box.

I SAY IF YOU CAN HOOK A LAPTOP TO IT OR CAN CHASE THE DOTS WITH IT IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!.

Same here I do not agree with allowing the new programmable digital boxes and I also have seen some weird 60ft and 1/8 mile times as compared to the 1/4 mile final ET. However like Jim said the boxes are legal. I did ask once when they started to allow the digital boxes and was told that if anyone is caught at the RACE with the laptop hooked up they would be DQ'd. However who is really going to police that???? no I can see and have "heard of" some doing it and if I ever really see them I will speak up. I still run a 6AL digital but not programmable box. Myself I think the digital box has no place in an NSS car. If it gets out of hand I'll just drop out and race points locally shruggy

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/21/15 08:45 PM

Not to worry I will put a retro "Mattie box" in there for you and then you just have to pay attention to the light you cut - everything else will take car of itself!!!

If that don't work I will have you plug your "smart phone" like your charging it and the rest will take car of itself.......

More than one way to fool the on-lookers

If all your trying to do is slow it down why don't you just lower your shift points?

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/21/15 09:25 PM

I havent read up on the Grid. It was my understanding that the ignition was capable of slew rate, timing control and rpm control, but had to have the add on modules to control them on the car. That was why the add on modules were illegal.

Who knows..

I still run a msd 7AL2.

I don't know of anyone running a grid, but the digital 7 boxes can pull timing out and all that jazz can't they?

We still use the 7al2 as well.. And Russ we use that same gold weight box with free weights in 10 lb increments. The weight seems to do ok... Sometimes with more weight we just hook up better and go faster lol

That's exactly why I no longer use weight. I don't think any of us have enough power to need traction control. I know I don't.

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/24/15 01:32 AM

Russ, you just need some 50lb plates that can be bolted over the axles in the trunk, think you've seen that before, as far as the grid, I went to Mopars at the Strip and visited with a bunch of my old racing buddies this spring, didn't run the car just flew out. But some old friends of mine who run stock were running the grid, and its legal if its the one where you can just review your run, but you can make changes in timing also.

Re: Index racers ---- weight boxes? - 04/24/15 02:49 AM

I have been slowing my car down from a high ten second car to an 11.50 car for many years now. Last year we tried 11.50 index racing and Won a Track Championship. I don`t use weight ( I`ve had one hernia surgery and don`t want another) but I use a Moroso throttle stop , mine is modified a little but it bolts to the corner carb bolt and can be set to restrict the throttle from opening all the way ,on my car the secondaries are barely opening and one turn is about 6 hundredths. A word of advice if you use it don`t just use the one bolt to hold it as it will turn slightly on the stud/bolt. I purchased the Jegs throttle cable/return spring bracket which also mounts to the carb bolts/studs and simply drilled another hole and added another bolt so it can`t move. I have considered a plate system but my results with my current set-up have been great.
