Another Hemi Block Question - Which Version?

Another Hemi Block Question - Which Version? - 04/05/15 02:53 AM

Looking at a new Hemi block Mopar #P5007669AB. This appears to be the version that has wedge style motor mount ears? If so can they be put onto a Hemi K-frame with some type of mount adapters like Shumaker makes?

Scott, I am fairly confident that version of the hemi replacement block has the wedge ears and the normal hemi mount pads. I know Dudek ran one like that in the road runner.

I wasn't aware anybody made mounts for doing it backwards.

There was a run of casting with the wedge style mounting ears.It was someones bright idea that the hemi could be bolted into any chassis with wedge k-member.It created a nightmare for any type of header application and most who had one cut the wedge mount casting off.The other issue is depending on the casting date and block serial number, most of these blocks fell in to that catagory of "junk"blocks that wouldn't hold demension after heat cycling. They were sold as "machine shop rejects" and were offered for $400.Many found their way to swapmeets.Check back in the archives and you will find mopar part outlets that offered them for $900 at the time.We had some that we returned for refund.

Do you have any idea of what serial numbers were part of the "the bad run"?

I remember those...

Yes. you'd have a hell of a time trying to get an exhaust to work with those...Never used any...saw a few..

I was told that while the Hemi mount bosses are on them, they just aren't drilled and tapped for the studs which is an easy fix. Also that the stock Hemi manifolds don't clear the 440 style mount ears, which is also an easy fix with a grinder.

So now the concern is the block castings themselves being a problem. Any idea how to determine which ones are good or not?

There is a stamped number either on the pan rail, side pad, or top pad.The casting run was aprox,500 blocks,Chrysler claimed the first batch were the ones with issues but we learned later that the mid 300s were bad also. The blocks we sent back were in the 350/360 area.
We were told we could keep them for $400 each or return them.At the time our cost for the blocks was under $2000 each.
When I get a chance I will try and find the paper work for those blocks.

It's not that easy , they aren't machined to dimension either.

I agree, even though they have the flat area for the hemi mount they may need to be machined to fit the mount or the mount cut to fit the flat area. The wedge style mounts on a hemi block was someones' wet dream. They may have had the hemi/wedge conversion kits in mind but gave no consideration for the exhaust system. As far as I'am concerned engine plate is the way to go unless your a purist doing a hi-end resto.
We had wedge block that had the hemi mount area that constantly threw oil out at high RPMs.After a few seasons of frustration chasing the leak it was finally found. At the front corner on the drivers side the deck was drilled for the hemi oil drain back hole and the wedge gasket and head didn't cover it.These are just a few of Mopar screw-ups back in the days.

None of the runs we have seen show up with an M-5digits,Is the number cast into the block or stamped and what location?

Re: Another Hemi Block Question - Which Version? - 04/09/15 08:05 PM

That M-5digit number is stamped into the block. I looked the block over and did not see any other stamped numbers.

On the block I looked at it was stamped in the drivers side front of the block on a machined surface right around the corner from where the oil pump mounts. I got a picture of it if interested

What does the follow alpha/numeric number that is cast into the block mean? 7A16

It took some checking and we found the M-5digit blocks were cast with no production date and many were the variety that had the 440 mounting ears that were removed.Check your block for a flat machined area above the oilpump mounting surface and machined areas where the 440 ears were. The quality of these blocks is unknown.Look also for porousity in the casting. These blocks were lighter than most Mega blocks and the coreplug holes are shallow. We found that 4 of these blocks have gone through the shop over the years,3 were able to check out and were bored 4.500 and were built to 528" street engines, one is still here.Goes to show we still can learn things if we take time to investigate.
