472 crate hemi freshin up with results - 03/08/15 04:19 AM

We have a street car 71 cuda also and let me start off with this was the biggest pig I have ever driven..lol We had nothing but problems with it leaking everywhere, smoking, & just no power so we pulled it out last year and this is what we found.Chrysler or whoever did this motor did not debur the block where the push rods come through, so it was eating the pushrods. I could move the springs around under the retainers, like literally, wrong retainers. The guide clearance was just about 50 thousandths. Also the camshaft eccentric for the fuel pump was going south.
we started with torque plating and diamond honing the block
added total seal rings
good stone valve job
correct retainers
bronze guides
Racer Brown 485 lift 238 dur. cam
cometic head,intake,& valve cover gaskets
we also changed out the crate rocker arms to original rockers
So the long short of it is now no leaks & PLENTY of power for a street car. This has a stock 2x4 intake & stock 68 auto carbs on it.
I never liked the crate motors, and this one has took the cake.
I am very happy with it now! I even have video for you guys.
sounds healthy idling and very responsive.
Made 554hp & 598tq with 93 oct. pump gas with
32 total deg. of timing....

That's nice power with that tiny little camshaft.

Can you give some specifics...ie was this a Cummins crate, and when did you purchase this crate engine. That will help clear up some things. It really sounds like it was a Cummins crate with your particular issues????

Sounds like a Cummins crate motor to me and if that list is only what was done they didn't do enough. The reason the pushrods were hitting the block is because the lifter bore angles are off , at least they were on my crate hemi from 2005 , along with the heads needing everything , decks were about .015 taller than spec and the main line bores were tapered ...

An MP crate Hemi built by Cummins was an EXPENSIVE CORE.

The motor was from right around 1999 2000. The decks were a bit off but we parallel decked it also.I felt like I was writing a novel so I didn't go through every detail. The just didn't debur the holes for the pushrods. I guess im lucky a lot of the other issues didn't come up. I did have to take the heads back off on the dyno, the pass head was leaking oil at the top right corner where it is rounded under the dist. Steel head gaskets, took that side of and measured, 25 thous on the bottom of the gasket, 35 thous at the top. I torqued the head again before pulling it off and still leaked. The oil was running around the tab that goes up near the intake on the deck. I was done at that point and went ahead & put cometic 27 thous. gaskets on it. Problem solved. I have never had good luck with steel head gaskets sealing on hemis. They were even original Direct Conection gaskets.
Has anyone else ran into this before?

How did you personally verify this?

Can anyone explain why Cummins screwed this up so badly? I mean they have a reputation of gold with their 5.9/6.7's, why could they not build a decent Hemi?

My guess is they are idiots and didn't want to work. I'm also a sucker that bought a Cummings crate in 01 and I've had a bunch of issues. Your right these crates are expensive cores!!!

I had the lifter bores bushed, the shop that did it told me the lifter angle was off which didn't surprise me considering how bad the rest of it was.

Because Chrysler had to find a new supplier after Arrow bailed.

Chrysler went with the LOW BIDDER and they got exactly what they paid for, low bidder quality.

I think Chrysler also hoped that most buyers took longer than the warranty period , which started when you bought it , before getting it running , basically a taillight warranty ...

I thought Arrow was still doing them then ?

Good to know on the steel shim head gasket , that is what I was going to use

On a very interesting note... Gary Stanton informed me Arrow has recently been tabbed to produce the new cast iron Mopar Hemi blocks. Although nothing has come available yet, according to him. We were talking about the subject when I picked up my Hemi from his shop about a month ago.

The "good power with tiny camshaft" remark points out the fact that really good heads don't need a lot of camshaft to make power.

The rumors about who is maybe producing new blocks has me humming REO Speedwagon's "Take It On the Run", namely "heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend who heard it from another..."

Less seems to be more on the street hemi's from the couple I have done. Most importantly is the timing on them.Remember they are not big block cheverolet's . I have dynoed a few and they don't need a lot of timing. They don't have a quench area like a wedge so they are not forgiving.

it's small, but mine was making 6 more HP/100RPM at 32 than at 34 on the dyno.
