Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/16/15 07:26 PM

Finally got to test the new Thumper Carb and wide band set up this weekend and out of the box with. First hit around 9:30 in the morning and went 10.02 with 1.38 60 @ 133 mph. Set the gopro on the guages and showed 12 to 13 wot. Very encouraging for first pass! Next three runs went to crap and went 10.40s & 50s??? checked the plugs and looked lean which that has never been the case with my engine. Did a compression chech, All cylinders were 170 range. scratching my head i poped the dist cap and noticed the screws holding the plate were loose. Tighened them back up,checked timing and was at 24 degrees, went from 95 jets to 97 fixed timing, got one more run and by that time it was afer 3 oclock and 90 degrees and effective altitude as around 2500 feet. Car went 10.07 with 1.39 60 at 132.99
very encouraging just need to do a little more tuning.

Got mine on. Waiting on my fuel pump filter to get here. Fuel system is cleaned and ready for fuel when the pre-filter gets here. Weather is looking better here.

What is your previous best in the same conditions ?

Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/16/15 10:34 PM

Best my car ran in real good air was 9.98 and 1.38 60 @ 135.Most of my runs have been 10.0 cool air to 10 teens in the heat with 1.40 to 1.44 60 foots.
I have since added 20 lbs with exhaust and diaper.
I only got two decent runs out of 5 but i'm sure i can get a tenth with knowing where my tune is for sure now. Keep in mind i'm not much of a tuner and i litterally put that carb on, set the idle and ran it as is. What is hard for me is the addition of the pipes for the 02 sensor, Sounds like i have a miss to me.
As my friend said after the TNT yesterday, We really need to find a chassis dyno if we want to dial them in right

How much exhaust was added. IMO, any car making enough powet to run a 10.0 will be hurt by an exhaust system unless its 3.5 or bigger

Added 18 in extensions with turnouts and they are 3.5

How much exhaust did you put on.. since you put that on
your not apples to apples here... if you put collector
extensions on that in itself can make for the 60'
(how long is your collector now)

MR P i'll take some pix when i get home and post them, Only reason they are on there is for the 02 sensor. I wanted to put them in the collectors but everyone said i needed the extensions so the sensor would read correctly

Without knowing your engine the proper collector length
would be in the 16"-18" to make max torque.. so your
extensions might have given you the decrease in the 60'..
just saying

Mine is now on the car, but too busy for the moment to fire up, check for leaks, fine tune, idle etc. Will be firing up and fine tuning real soon.

Here are the pipes, 18 inch with the turn outs.
Engine combo is 470 B block with little EZ heads
Assume it makes 700 HP.
02 Sensor is on the right side and 12.5 inches past the collector.
Headers are typical hooker 1 7\8 with 3.5 collectors.
Carb is 1150 dominator.

What is your body style and how much does it weigh?. Looks good under the hood

Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/17/15 05:25 AM

ET, 60ft and all that is great, but mph is power and you are down some. Could be the weather, but you need to jet for mph and then work on the ET.

I agree and this is a different carb than what he ran before so no back to back test and the weather was apparently warmer than the 9.98 best. What fuel do you run and what compression Mikey?
Posted By: mikeysmopars

Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/17/15 06:06 AM

110 sunoco and 12.5 compression.
Keep in mind i had dist issues so first run was 9:30 and three bad runs and last one was a good one for how hot it was.
My next TNT will be MATS in two weeks so trying to sort out anything i can before.

Heard great things about the C12 fuel from Mark Monte and others so who knows there. What were the afrs from the start and through the midrange.

Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/17/15 07:21 AM

Only really got to see the last run and held from 12 to 13 after i shifted to second and high gear. My Buddie was able to turn the gopro off and on from his phone and download it but couldnt zoom in on it on the first few runs but was in the green digital lights the whole time. I need to mount it closer to the gauge to really read it.
Still it never ran that good in the heat so it was encouraging

There's more there for sure but good runs. In thr green is not enuff info so see what's needed to see the gauge and can you post plug pics?

Here is what they look like after idling back from last run but I'll post one later from my phone right before I jetted it

Re: Thumper Carbs? - 03/21/15 01:19 AM

Got my fuel filter today, installed it, put fuel in the cell,,fired right up!!! About 3-4 minutes of warming up, I could get out of car and check the timing, as I had the distributor out priming the new oil through the motor after oil change. I reset the timing to 35* as it was at 40* from my priming and replacing, etc. Let it warm up to 190* and adjusted idle RPM. Gave the idle air screws about 1/8 turn out and all was good. Sounds VERY clean and CRISP at idle and revs quickly. The Township went by today with their sweeper getting the cinders off the road, SO, I'm thinking they know I'm getting ready to roll here!! THANKS Dom!!

There is nothing to see mixture wise on that plug. The only thing the threads and strap tell you is heat. The mixture is read off the very base of the porcelain. Out there on the end means little to nothing
