rear disc brake conversion - 02/28/15 10:50 PM

I remember a saw a post where disc brakes can be installed in the rear using new parts such as
Cherokee rotors and small GM caliper or something like that to have an affordable set up.....

Can't retrace the informations....
Can somebody help ?

Thanks

Or

93 Jeep cherokee front rotors
GM metric calipers
weld on brackets available from Speedway motors

Speedway Motors weld on brackets, the rotors I used were 2000 Grand Cherokee fronts, and GM metric calipers from I believe mid-80's G body. Whole thing cost me a total of about $150 using all new parts and hardware. Works great!

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 02/28/15 11:52 PM

I used 95 jeep grand Cherokee for the rotors 88 bucks for the pair. 92 s10 caliper 11 bucks each and bracket from jegs. Was like 12-15 bucks

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 02/28/15 11:54 PM

93 Cherokee rotors will get you what you need, that same rotor is used in a lot of Jeep applications so I'm sure other years/models will work as well.
A 93 Dakota master cylinder will work well

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/01/15 12:08 AM

Do you need a shorter-longer pushrod for the Dakota Master cyl ?

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/01/15 12:34 AM

Adjustable pushrod and 4 to 2 bolt adapter will make the install easy

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/01/15 01:09 AM

do you install the caliper at the front of wheel or behind....

Someone has pics ?
Thanks

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/01/15 01:57 AM

Not sure if it really makes a difference, but mine are installed with caliper rearward. Also, you may want to install an adjustable proportioning valve between the master cylinder and the rear line to adjust front/rear bias.

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/01/15 02:06 AM

Another thing worth mentioning, my rotors had to be machined slightly to seat completely over the flanges on my axles. Not much, and may have been the cheap rotors I bought. When I installed mine I put an air fitting in the caliper and bolted the caliper to the bracket. Tightened the lug nuts on the rotor and slid the caliper with pads and bracket over the rotor and placed them where I wanted them. Put an air hose to the caliper to "clamp" it to the rotor and tack it up!

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/08/15 12:56 AM

I was looking at the 1993 Jeep rotors and they appear to be close to 11" diameter and the brackets seem to be designed for the larger 11-3/4" rotors. Do the brackets need to be re-radiused to move the calipers closer to the axle centerline by 3/8"?

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/08/15 01:33 AM

Heyyyyyyy !!!!

I just tried them on 5 min ago......

I have the same problem! someting need to be done there lollll

The bracket is too long, or I need 11 3/4 rotors too........

Sure looks like it !...

Better to push the bracket toward the calipers and drill 2 other holes for the brake pins......

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/08/15 05:04 AM

Those GM calipers didn't work well new, what has changed that would want me to put them on the back of my 3900 lb car that goes 140+ in the 1/4 mile??

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/08/15 06:01 PM

Yes I moved mine down closer to the rotor
Posted By: Wedgeman

Re: rear disc brake conversion - 03/08/15 08:24 PM

I cut the radius 5/8 in closer to the axle so the pads fully contact the rotors.
I made a fitting to plug into the air hose and apply pressure on the rotor to square it, works like a charm !

Tac weld, remove the calipers and fully weld on both sides...
