Need cooling system reccomendations/setup - 02/22/15 02:41 PM
Well the BB is about to installed the 72 Cuda. It was originally a SB car so I need some recommendations on radiator, fan etc. It is a -1 headed BB so I think I need something substantial. I plan to run a mechanical water pump but am open to recommendations you have had success with. This a street driven car located in Florida. Thanks in advance!

Without knowing how much HP it makes I would say..
get a big radiator, a good shroud, a good elec fan
and a AC water pump

GOOD SHROUD !
A big radiator loses any benefit if you aren't dragging air through it.
I have seen more than a couple instances of really unfriendly drivers settling down and driving like a normal car would by simply adding a decent shroud to the mix.

I run a generic Summit radiator. The dual fan set-up is out of a new Challenger. It fits easily and the shroud is part of it. These fans MOVE some air. Not a great pic but you can see the upper mounting bracket. The lower bracket is similar.

I have heard a lot of guys singing the praises of the HHR fan set up.
My car has a BIG aluminum radiator and with a single 15 " electric , I thought I would be O.K.
Not even close.
The dimensions of the aluminum radiator are very close to the stock A body radiator , so I bought the HHR fan / shroud combo.
It covers the entire core and I went from creeping over 210 degrees to never going above 190.
If one will fit your deal , it is the best 50 bucks you will ever spend.

I live in the mojave desert and my BB stays pretty cool w/a 26" alum. Griffin radiator, a Moroso drop in w/pump and the HHR Chevy fan which has it`s own shroud built in................

I also run a Summit radiator:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-380428/overview/This one fits my 22" core-support opening perfectly. I run a Summit flex fan:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g4917with a custom made aluminum shroud. My motor is more in the 500 HP level, but it runs cool with no issues. I've thought at times of adding an electric fan, but the current setup cools just fine. I'll see if I can find a picture of the setup.

Cut the inner rad mount for the small radiator out of the car and trim the frame tabs back and stuff a 19x31 in it so it sits flush with the support.... Then fab a cover from the grill to the rad...Never over heat again!

Okay so basically,
1.) Biggest Radiator you can make fit
2.) Aluminum Radiator preferable
3.) Electric Fan with shroud that covers the most area of the radiator
4.) Good Water Pump
Got it!
I have been looking at the Summit radiators and it seem they are all 2 pass. I know other brands seem to indicate 2,3 and 4 core. Is this not necessary? Also, is it best to run a separate trans cooler rather then one in the radiator?
Thanks!
