727 race rebuild question - 01/27/15 10:59 PM

I will be rebuilding my 727 in the near future. It's stock from 1979 and needs attention. I have a manual (forward pattern) valve body. I'm not going trans brake so what parts should I use for the rebuild? It's going behind a 650 hp small block.

In our Hemi Nostalgia SS we just go to NAPA, get a rebuild kit and use it. Torqueflites are good stuff, you'll be fine.

If your VB does not have the LBA then I highly recommend getting a billet front drum.

Other than that, not much else special is needed.

Call John at CRT. He will get you hooked up right.

I just rebuilt mine last summer I have a billet drum, red racing clutches and ultimate sprag.I have about 750hp.My old trans just had a rebuild kit and shift kit didn't hold up to big hp.

Add Kolene steels with the Alto red clutches.
Check the splines of the low gear set, if they are cracking you will want a steel splined low gear set

I will be spraying a 150 shot of NOS. does this change the parts that are needed?

smooth clutches in the rear clutch, linned or waffled clutches in the front clucth(direct) if no LBA valve body then get a billet front(direct) drum. If LBA valve body then a 47RE or BB 727 front drum will work, bolt-in rear sprag, wide cast kickdown band red lined, carbon low reverse band, billet rear servo, BB 727 planets will work. teflon seal ring kit, rear vent with catch can. Also the 727 handbook would be a good idea, it will explain some of the tricks like how to modify the front servo and getting a ported stator support shaft for better feed to the front clutch.

That's what I did with my stock 79 727. It's been a while, but the kit he put together for me ( for a 10 second car) included a steel front drum, bolt in sprag, stouter band link, low drag seals. I already had a LBA valve body. Been trouble free for a long time now. Forgot, added an additional clutch disc for 3rd gear - involved a skinnier snap ring - think the kit had several in it to choose from.

The 727s are tough and a 150 shot will be no problem, though it would be best to use it in 2nd or 3rd to begin with. Then after you get used to the way it feels...go for it all the way through....YeeHaw!!!!!!!!

FWIW, since LBA valve bodies have been mentioned, I thought I'd mention that there's ancillary work to do in order to get that to work if yo have a reverse shifting pattern VB. I'd say exactly what it is, but don't have the sheet that came with mine with me. IIRC there's a couple of holes to drill somewhere.

If the forward pattern VB was built from a kit (TF-3, Manual Pack) it is already LBA.

Thanks I clarified my post. This is the link to the instructions I mentioned if anyone cares. I had it in my head that it was just a matter of changing the valve body to get the LBA to work. http://www.coanracing.com/PDFS/InstallInstructions/COA-42011.pdf
