Fuel Pump Push Rod with Roller Cam

Fuel Pump Push Rod with Roller Cam - 01/20/15 07:52 PM

I know there's got to be some experience on this topic. I ran a 440 with a steel push rod in the mechanical fuel pump while running a Comp Street Roller Cam. I ran this combo for 2500 miles or so. There was no visible wear on the cam when dissassembled. I was told that since a roller cam is billet steel, I should be using a brass-tipped push rod. When I went to purchase the part, I noticed a number of bad reviews due to wear. Should I continue to use the original, stock push rod? Are there options on the brass-tipped rod? What reccomendations do you have? Thanks in advance for your help.

I contacted several Cam manufactures and asked about bronze vs. stock steel fuel pushrods with steel billeted cams. All of them said that I had to use a Bronze pushrod. They said I would damage the fuel lobe on the cam.
That being said, my engine builder said that mopar's have plenty of oil around that lobe and the steel on steel should not wear. However, I thought about going to a bronze pushrod. But I have heard that the pushrod could (rare) mushroom at the end and then you have a hard time replacing at the intervals you need to. You need to check the rod every once in awhile. They are sacrificial rods.
So, I decided to avoid the whole issue and go electric fuel pump.
I have too much invested in my engine to take a chance.
