SBM Air Gap mods? - 01/07/15 04:49 AM

Any of you "porter" guys have proven Air Gap mods??

If it's worth the $$, I'd gladly send you mine to do your thing to it.

PM or email me if you'd prefer. Thanks!

Not a air gap but a performer i put on my van that has like 150hp. Yours might not be this bad

I have seen some pretty nice gains on a BBM RPM with porting but haven't had a chance to test the small block version back to back
It looks like it could definitely use the same treatment though.

I did one....Ports and cut the divider down....removed the logo, removed all the extra bosses on it...etc

Any flow bench numbers before/after to evaluate any gains??

I built a 402 SB with eddy heads, TTIs, 230@.050 hydraulic roller, and we ran a 650 double pumper, it was choking bad as the RPM climbed, started pulling vaccume and not pulling as hard as I thought it should. We had no room for a spacer and no bigger carb in the budget so I chucked a carbide in the router and milled out 3/4 inch of the divider from front to back and it would pull another 500 RPM. When we built it I did just a little radiusing in the plenum and some gasket matching... basic stuff. After eventually switching to a 750 it became a real animal pulling another 500 RPM more and now the hood and doors barely open and close (68 cuda).

No, but the entire fuel mixture cleaned right up. I was using a carb and it really liked the 1" open spacer and the cut down divider. Obviously port matching helped too, but it had a snappier rev to it, and it really liked it.

I did it in stages. I tried a 1/2" divided spacer first, then cut the divider down a bunch and used a 1" open spacer....I think it liked the added plenum the most. Then I switched to efi...

I was just reading today in one of the Mopar mags
that they are building a 416 with that intake and
it showed a few pics and its mods.. not sure about
flow numbers..this was part 2 of the artical....
sorry I dont recall which mag... but its on sale now

Thanks all! I'll hunt down the MM mag.

The gasket match is a no brainer as the intake is a little conservative compared to my gaskets, and I ASSUMED the added plenum would be a plus. I just thought I'd survey the brain trust and see what is out there and if someone already had "porting" program established, I'd contribute to their revenue.

I'd port match, smooth radius the entry at carb and run it.

Sorry to hijack the thread but what kind of valve covers are these?

That's the plan now. I'll also cut down and narrow the divider as that seems to be SOP on these intakes I've learned.

I know it's a different intake but I did a fair amount of flowbench and porting on an ld340 intake and divider work paid little dividends Intake flange and radius attention was where the payoff was. The runners needed work but with the design of these intakes that was impossible. If you want to flow over 270-275 cam step up to a different manifold
