stock 70 340 can help... - 01/02/15 01:18 AM

Been driving myself crazy trying to decide on a can swap for my 340....not going with anything outrageous just thought it'd be time for a little upgrade...I am looking for something "plug and play" and was looking at the Comp xe268h..but with the "kit" you can purchase through jegs/summit comps site says head machining is necessary...any advice or other can suggestions? Stock spec 70 340..auto...rear gears swap between 323 and 391.... Stock exhaust manifolds and a six pack on top...tires are 27" tall but will be running some smaller diameter drag radials for strip time...no power brakes etc so vacuum is not a huge concern..car has a 2500 stall converter also....sorry to bug everyone with another can choice thread but I am fed up enough with it all I was about ready to just buy the MP 488 cam

The XE268 is a perfect camshaft for that application.

I thought the 901 spring fit on a stock head. It's a 1.494 OD spring. Catalog has no mention of machining, only when you get to the 995 double spring of the XE274H and up.

The XE268H is a good camshaft.

Set initial timing in the 14-18 range, total below ping and it should run really well.

You're right I looked at the wrong footnote...it said that it needs adjustable rockers?!?!

Only if you don't have the right length pushrods. Adjustable rockers are the crutch.
That's my opinion.

There are many SB mopars running that cam with stock style non-adjustables.

Possible but if the lift is greater then that means
the base circle is cut down deeper.. and if it is then
the push rods will be short... if you know the difference
of the base then you can figure the new push rod
length... but I always like to measure the
proper push rod length with the new cam in place
and use a adjustable push rod to check it... if its
a hyd cam find out what the company wants for pre-load
and figure that in also if your not using adjustable
rockers

I'm curious about your black 71? And this "stock" 70? Just what are we talking about here?

I replaced an old street hemi grind in a 70 340 with the XE268. 3.55 geared E body, stock manifolds, 4 speed. Plenty of good mid range, nice idle, stuck it in dot to dot and let it eat. Real good choice. Don't over think it - pull the trigger, it's a good cam.
