742 gear question! - 12/27/14 07:05 AM
Hey guys, I have a question on my 742 4.57 Richmond gears, have about 40 passes and about 50 street miles on them. When I installed them they had a little noise when loaded no noise coasting. Last time out street driving got on it pretty hard and while letting off of the gas had a bad howl while coasting and the same loaded. So pulled the gear out. Has a Richmond spool, so before I pulled the pass axles I rocked the axle back and fourth and there was 1/4" of a inch of backlash. Removed the pass axle, on the drivers side rocked the axle and now the backlash felt normal. Removed the gear and has .010 backlash now on the bench. Is it possible to have a pinion bearing issue causing the pinion to move that much under load? Can I reuse these gears again with them already making noise or start over with all new parts? Check to see if I could find any bearing play on the bench but everything is tight! Cap bolts and pinion nut are tight, Any ideas?
Thanks Matt
