Tell Me About my W9s

Tell Me About my W9s - 11/19/14 02:49 AM

My son recently picked up a set of W9 heads at a flea market. I don't know anything about them and was hoping someone could give me some insight. The casting number is P4532847, the heads have the ZAP logo with 2569 behind the logo. One head has scribed D5622-2 (6 could be G)directly under the logo. Under the valve cover on top of a intake runner is stamped 967839, the other head has 1049839 stamped in same location. They have been CNC'd and blended. The valves are 2.180 and 1.625. Intake runners have threaded holes for injection. I haven't measured the chambers as yet but they look fairly small. I also found a couple 51's stamped on each head which could be chamber size. I'll measure them soon.

RyanJ webb site says the ZAP W9's are rare but doesn't say if they're unique or just a few cast, any insight helpful. Heads appear older and have some marks and scratches but it looks like they've never been run on an engine.

Thanks, Max

I have a set of them, they're 59* heads. Mine have 53 stamped on them by someone. The ones I have are Zeus castings.

Zeus Aluminum Products (ZAP) was a common maker of the w9. Throw up some pics. Can tell alot more about what you have that way. Sounds like circle track stuff.

Rick, they did a 59 version, just hacked away the intake runner. Dont think you can tell them from any numbers stamped or cast into them from a 48 head. 59 versions can be un-ruined with a welder.

The 59 usually had the outer bolt holes shaved off though.

This is my impression.
The trenches cut for pushrod clearance are a dead giveaway on the 59 degree heads and it is a crap shoot whether the outer bolts were removed or not.
I have seen both.
I'd lean toward sprint car or road race with the port injection holes machined.
Nothing that can't be plugged.
I suppose they are worth scrap prices.......I'll even pay shipping.
When you say " flea market " I don't even think I want to know what they sold for.

I finally have some pictures. The combustion chamber is 51cc by my measurement. Any insight from these pictures would be appreciated!!!

The 2.18 with the injection holes are the sprint
car alky heads... nice heads.. cant say for fact if they
are 48* or 59*... its gonna take rpms or big cubes to
make them efficient... more than likely they flow about

Re: Tell Me About my W9s - 11/28/14 09:41 PM

I am a little curious why they have been sitting for as long as they have.
They are 48 degree , looks like beryllium copper seats , definitely drilled for port injection........98.73459 % likely they came from a sprint car.
Maybe a road racer.
It looks like there was a coolant passage drilled between the exhaust valves of the center cylinders....I have seen this in book form only ( How to build Big Inch Small Block MoPars ) but it is a nice choice for any motor that will see a lot of heat I bet.
I'd pressure test them and if everything is cool , then you probably have a nice set of heads.
Did they come with valves ?

This is just flat wrong! Showing those pictures right before a weekend, when I'll have nothing to do but sit and think about'em.

It's the worse kind of pornography.

They look like RP version to me?
Posted By: 1967dartgt

Re: Tell Me About my W9s - 11/29/14 05:32 AM

Yes look like a rp which would be a 48* head. Also have a 13* valve angle.

Re: Tell Me About my W9s - 11/29/14 07:17 AM

Looks like a non raised port to me.

One way to check is all the Raised port W9's I've see take a -10 O-ring fitting for the water ports and the non raised were -8 O-ring

Re: Tell Me About my W9s - 11/29/14 06:45 PM

What you see is what I have, no valves. I have a set of 2.18 tit valves but the stem is smaller than 11/32. It's interesting about the RP vs non RP discussion, I don't know how to tell them apart. I do believe the water outlets are -10 size/threads, I'll verify next time I'm at the shop. Is there any other way to tell them apart?? How far is the port off the deck in each type head??

This pic is on Shady Dell's site

And this is what it says

"W9 RP (RAISED PORT) on left, "regular" W9 on right. W9 RP heads have .800" Raised intake ports. W9 RP hand port development, in house at Shady Dell will occur winter 2004/2005. Stay tuned...."
