cam degreeing question

I was taught years ago to degree motorcycles cams with a method that I have never seen anywhere else and was wondering if anyone else does it this way. I set the degree wheel to true TDC, install a dial indicator on the valve and push down above the max lift and zero it out. then rotate motor cw till i get .050 opening and take a reading, on my 528 lift solid cam it was 13 degrees before tdc, then keep rotating until i get .050 before the valve closes and take a reading, with my 528 cam it was 53 degrees. I then add 180 degrees and i get 13+53+180= 246 duration, i then divide in half 123 and deduct the 13 degrees opening to get my 110 lobe center reading. Does anyone else do it this way? it always seems to work so i dont think its wrong. I tried to do the way it says in the instructions, but my degree wheel only goes to 90 degrees then back down so the math doesnt work out, i guess i could figure it out. any confirmation i'm doing it right

Do the .050 before and after max lift for finding the intake lobe centers, once you have degreed where you want it then do the exhaust to verify that the cam is ground on the lobe seperation angle it says it is I will check the intake and exhaust lobe timimng at .050 on both lobes also, not at the retainers though The rocker ratio will affect the .050 specs at the retainer, not so on the lobe or lifters

My problem is my degree wheel only goes to 90 degrees then back down I'll have to write 180 degrees on it and try it to see if it matches the way I do it

I have several degree wheels that I use that I have to add from 90 to get to 130,140 and so on No big deal, it adds up, 90,100,110,120 and so on

Thanks I just did it and it came out the same , I like my method better I think it's more accurate
