Roller cam choices - who else to check with?

Roller cam choices - who else to check with? - 11/01/14 04:30 AM

SB Mopar 360, street/strip combo, looking to replace my Hughes Engine HE3844AL hydraulic flat tappet with a roller cam.

Reached out to the following 'big' companies:
1) Comp Cams
2) Crower
3) Crane Cams
4) Lunati

...but there are a bunch more niche players, some of them great Mopar gurus...I often see recommendations in posts stating "...go see xxx...he does great custom cams...".

So my question is: who are our Mopar guys I should now be talking to?

I am looking for a next step up cam, but it still must be streetable...I'm not talking here docile...but this is not a drag race car...

Thanks!

We spec our own grinds based on in house and track testing here. If you order from somebody, regardless if it is a cam company or another shop , make sure they ask the right questions.
I ordered from several different companies for a dyno cam testing session for a Mopar Muscles article I wrote a few years ago. Only two out of eight companies asked what I consider the correct questions.
Some big companies get by on their names and fancy advertising. A few will try to get you what you really need.

I have a ton of respect for Dwayne Porter. That is who I have used for cams and would again....guy is ultra knowledgable and very good at gathering combo info and intended usage and being spot on.
Fun guy to talk to as well, really pleasant.

I agree as I run a cam Dwayne speced for my eng and I could not be happier. My cam is a solid flat tappet as Dwayne can spec them all as he is very very good. I have his phone # if you want it ? Ron

I have run the comp 308R on my indy headed 360 stock stroke for a while now. love the cam and it made about 530hp with my Dwayne Porter ported 360-1s. very mild easy on the valve train but still makes great power and off the shelf.

For me it is not so much the "company" as it is about the "person" with whom I am dealing.

Generally speaking, most companies have a full range of lobe profiles to offer. The art comes from the person packaging up the cam details for your specific application.

Personnelly, I don't go to the larger cam manufacturers directly. Instead I go to a distributer that I trust because he is closer to the action and knows first hand what works based on his actual dyno and track testing, tuning, and customer feed back.

Usually the smaller cam companies/suppliers also have great expertise.

It will come down to you. You will need to determine who you think best understands exactly what you want, and balancing that with what he recommends and if it makes sense to you.

Exactly...you are right on the money here. I was rather pleasantly surprised by the Comp Cams guy...we exchanged a number of emails and he answered all my questions. I provided the head flow numbers, current car performance, etc, etc...seemed like he asked all the right questions and explained which one of the several cam profiles he suggested would be the better choice.

I am looking for that kind of an attention to detail.

Last night I was plowing through a bunch more postings (Google search), found references to Bullet Cams, Howards and Engle (which used to do the Hughes cams, but their site seems badly dated???).

Dunnuck Racing: email going your way sir!

OK, thanks you guys...I'll look up the other guys.

Since you are looking for a custom cam I would add a couple more names to your list.

Mike Jones http://www.jonescams.com (704)489-2449

Harold Brookshire AKA UDHarold - His latest lobes are available from Howards Cams. Howards bought out Custom Cam Company that used to grind Harold's cams.

I have always been a fan of Bullet cams, they do work well, that being said, on the 340 soon to go together for my street car I am going to have Keith Dunnuck spec this cam out.

Although I haven't met Keith, I have seen his cars in passing back in my Osceola and Martin days. We are facebook friends and know some of the same people, his posts always seem to be well thought out and he does ask the right questions.

Dwayne Porter spec'd a solid roller cam for me on a MW Victor headed 512 and asked lots of questions to make sure I got what I need. He sent the order to Comp and had it drop shipped to me. Worked out great! Also, it was a couple bucks cheaper than a Comp solid roller off the shelf from Summit. I think it's better to let a builder spec it vs going direct to cam company

Some of the fastest smallblocks on here run Predator cams.

Tim @ Bullet cams.
I am seriously impressed with how my car performs and how much power it makes , yet still has very nice manners and should be easy on springs.
We spent a few minutes talking and his suggestions and input left me feeling that I was in good hands.
The price was more than fair too.

Cam Motion would be first. And second. Maybe Jones third. IDK if Jim@ Racer Brown does rollers (I'm ASSuming he does) I would call him as well BEFORE I bought anything.

Tim worked for Harold Brookshire before Partridge bought him out via bankruptcy. All those guys down there are sharp with cam science. Northern Mississippi is like camshaft mecca.

I've bought over 60 camshafts from Dwayne Porter and couldn't be happier...Every single one has ran as good or better than I'd hoped...Super nice guy, knows his stuff and tells it like it is...

I have two solid rollers to try w/ my new engine combination. One came from Dwayne Porter (802)951-1955 (who also spec'd & supplied my last solid flat-tappet cam) and the other is from a company that was also mentioned above with whom I've had no other prior experience. I won't mention who the other company is, simply because I have no results on which to base a recommendation.
