Harland Sharp rockers and now low oilpressure...

Harland Sharp rockers and now low oilpressure... - 10/19/14 06:15 PM

Put Harland Sharp roller rockers # S70016K in my Indy EZ 295 head engine.

Now problem is low oil pressure with engine running at idle, normal temp. The gauge shows just 5 Psi of pressure at idle, the oil pressure does go up instantly with Rpm, but I dont like it that its that low at idle... Car is a street/strip car...

I run 5W30 Gulf MAX Supreme oil.
Run a Milodon external oil system, Melling HV pump.

-Am I beeing paranoid about the oil pressure at idle? If not -How can I get a little more oil pressure at idle?

Thanks

Their webpage says:

"Oil restrictors may be necessary to maintain oil pressure."

You can put a Mig welding tip in the rocker stand to help with oil psi.drill the tip to .060 to .100 and cut it to 1/2" and slip it in the rear rocker stand before you put the stud or bolt in and it holds the mig tip in.Done.

-Yes, Thank You, I also read this. Problem is they dont tell how, what kind, where, etc.. to put the restrictors...

That would be the easiest solution , you need to put something in there to restrict the flow ... but this isn't a stock iron head , Indy's oil differently ...

Nevermind ...

Looked at the Indy Cylinder Head page.. Found a Head oil restrictor kit # 440-R4-10R.

Any one use this kit? How does it work and how/where do you instal the restrictors? Who sells it?

Also the Indy EZ 295 Heads I have, have the external oil lines, could one put a restrictor in the oil lines going into the heads?

Thanks

Re: Harland Sharp rockers and now low oilpressure... - 10/19/14 07:27 PM

with my -1 heads and h&s rockers i installed 10-32 brass allen plugs in the fittings going into the heads and drilled to suit myself

I drill and tap(6x32) the NPT end of the fitting that goes into the heads(both sides) and screw a 6x32 brass set screw and drill it to .039 Works good and last along time

With the Indy-1 and SR head external oil kit if used you can tap the inside of the brass fittings for Holly jets and use .052 to .075 jet sizes to restrict the oil.HS and other rockers that use the needle rollers on the shafts tend to bleed more oil.

In my opinion, this is the best, easiest and simplest solution. Been doing it like this for a long time, always works, and is easy to adjust to your liking....

Out of curiosity what was the net change in oil pressure?

Re: Harland Sharp rockers and now low oilpressure... - 10/20/14 10:19 AM

Thank You for the pics!!!

GTX Matt* The oil pressure went down from about 20 psi at idle to 5 psi after the rocker change (engine at running temp). Engine idle is set at 1000rpm.

I do mine basically the same as his are I use a #6 brass set screw and install it in the other end (NPT end) of the fittings in the heads so in case it backs out it will be captured in the heads and not on the block sides The ones I buy and use have a small allen head end so I use a .039 drill to open them up all the way through to that size

This seems the most simple way. If I start to mess with the small brass screws Ill probably just end up and

At idle wouldnt some 10-15 Psi of oil pressure be more than enough???

Thanks again!!!

Re: Harland Sharp rockers and now low oilpressure... - 10/21/14 02:34 AM

It depends on the idle speed for the prssure, 10 lbs per 1000 RPM works great for me with 5W20 wt oil when it is hot, above 150 F My pump gas 518 C.I. Duster motor idled at 18 to 20 lbs with that oil at or above 160 F oil temps at 850 RPM in gear That was with the Eddy RPM heads, I set the idle RPM higher(1000 to 1100 RPM in gear hot) when I put the Indy heads on it with the external oiling with the .039 restrictors It would have between 25 to 35 Lbs at 1100 RPM or higher, 50 lbs by 2000 RPM with that hot oil

You need the restricter kit in the oil feed lines - if you run it unrestricted - all your oil will be up in the heads and you risk sucking the pan dry - we use the .060 restricter kitfrom INDY - but like BGR said you can make your own just as easy.

What side clearance are you setting the rockers at? Too much clearance will also drop oil pressure. I shoot for 0.015 inches and make sure a 0.020 inch shim don't fit. I use a u shaped SS shim.

I run a .065 restrictor in the tee before going to each head. Tried a .075 and immediately flooded the heads and pushed raw oil out the breathers. I run 400 seat pressure, 1.6 HS rockers .810 lift with NO problems for years.

I run a .060 restrictor through the standard block oil holes but they have been drilled and fed from the galleys for full-time oiling. The top end gets loads of oil and I get 25 lbs of pressure priming with a cordless drill. I have yet to fire the motor but I think I could have afforded to go with a smaller retrictor. This is with a standard volume pump too.

I used Holley carb jets (#48) to restrict the oil flow to the top end. Run 5W-30 oil. Engine oil pressure is 16-17 Psi at idle and about 70 Psi at WOT. (The jets have a 1/4-32 UNF thread)

Thanks for this helpful thread, I did the same thing using jets...
Wanted to bring pressure from 20 in gear to 35 with 20w50 oil. Turned out that 69 jet was perfect fit.
