Leaky front runners what to do? - 09/28/14 01:01 AM

When I got this Daytona it had new GY front runners on it. The guy I bought it from said the front wheels needed to be resealed. They are the old Cragar super tricks. So I resealed the wheels. Well they were still going flat so today I used the soapy water. They are leaking through the sidewalls. What is the fix for this? I've heard of using dish soap on the rears. Will the latex fix-a-flat work?

Fix a flat is a temp fix and I've even seen it ruin a tire from being left in. It degraded the rubber and made it impossible to balance the tire.

Dish soap on the inside of the side wall can fix a leaking side wall if it's not too bad.

If the tires have been left outside for a long period of time and you can see weather cracking on the side walls then your only option is to replace the tires. I had this issue once and talked to the goodyear rep about it once and was informed that the race tires do not have the UV protection stuff that normal daily driver tires do.

Bill these tires have always been inside a garage. When I bought the car last July they still had the mold [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] on them. I have made 2 runs on them. The side walls are not dry cracked. They are seeping air where the serial number plate left it's mark in the side wall.

Try the dish soap then.

I admit I've never had to use on front tires but it does work. I've even used it to seal the rear tires on my girls Jrs.

Bill will I have to dismount them? Can I put it in by taking out the valve core and putting it through the valve stem?

You will need to dismount them as you want to coat the entire inside surface with an even coat.

I used fix a flat on my rear tires and it worked great to seal em but now you`ve got me thinking twice about it........... Nice 2 c u again Bill.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned installing tubes, preferably a size smaller than recommended. That does defeat the purpose of having lightweight front tires, but it would be the most effective fix. I use to "paint" the insides of my slicks with dish soap, but haven't needed to with Hoosier radial slicks. Never did the fronts, but I'd be careful. Obviously, age even without sun exposure causes rubber to deteriorate. I had a "brand new" 7 year old trailer tire, stored indoors, peel like a banana after less than 2,000 miles.

(Is there a metal valve stem rule for front wheels/tires?)

Not as far as I know but then I've been out of it for a while

I do use metal valves in every wheel that does not have a tube though.

What Tony said. If they were on a garden tractor Id fix them. But for a race car they would be in the trash can. Those tires sound compromised.

I had the same problem with my old Crager Super tricks, kept going flat. Turned out to be at the seam,where the two wheel halfs bolt together. Cleaned the old sealer off and put new stuff on..good to go.

Yes there is, I was called on it once.

NHRA General Reg. Sec 20 5.1
"Metal, screw-in valve stems mandatory in tubeless
tires, front and rear, on vehicles running 11.99 or quicker"

I have used Seal-All, a thin smear after roughing up the inside surface where the leak is. If you air up the tire a little it'll push the Seal-All into the pinhole until it dries. A thin smear doesn't affect the balance either.
