Street Hemi Intake recommendations

Street Hemi Intake recommendations - 09/05/14 02:33 AM

I am close to finishing a Hemi for street driving. 472, Stage V heads, fairly mild cam, TTI headers. Trying to come up with a nice intake manifold and carburetor setup to complement this. Was considering the Mopar dual plane 2X4 with the Vanke modification offered by Arruza. Also wondering if the carburetors can use a progressive linkage as stock or a solid linkage? Would a single 4 barrel be something to be considered? Thanks.

Stage V is a much better intake if you don't have to run a stock aircleaner. You really want progressive linkage with a street driven car.

I read all the tests on 500+ ci HEMI inline intakes and Stage V came out on top, so I bought one, two 750cfm Hollys, etc. Now, lets get real. #1 What are you doing with the car? Street driving? Maybie a pass down the strip?...someday, maybie? What you need to know is, the factory Carter/Edelbrock, carbs have the fuel line inlet on the PASSENGER side. That leaves lots of room for the linkage, kickdown, etc. on the DRIVER side. They did that for a good reason! It gets VERY crowded when you try to cram all of that on the DRIVER side! Then you have air cleaner issues, now you have to order an air cleaner from ONE sours, in CANADA. It is a Bottom feed, NOTHING like the original It cost over $600 and is "polished" aluminum. I spent $300 ADDITIONAL to chrome it. Do you like the original looking hard lines? I went through TWO 8' LENGTHS of stainless tubing, over $300 for tubing benders, I lost track of the hours I spent trying to "mirror image" the fuel lines. I finally got it, sort of, at least the car show judges haven't noticed, but what a pain! I don't have the "Pentastar" emblem embossed on the intake, I am STILL trying to make a decent return spring bracket that doesn't interfere with the fuel lines, and I absolutely MUST run synchronize carb linkage! The Stage V is an open plenum intake, the REAR carb sees the signal from cylinder #1 etc. It HAS to have both carbs opening TOGETHER! Trust me on this. If I had it to do over, I would buy everything in a kit from Mancini for HALF of what I spent. I have built and tuned HEMIs with the factory intake and Edelbrock 600s and they SCARE me with just 426 ci! and PROGRESSIVE linkage. Oh, buy the way, it all BOLTS ON!

Re: Street Hemi Intake recommendations - 09/05/14 03:50 AM

With a "mild" cam, I think you only have two reasonable options,
the Vanke mod dual plane with two Eddy 650 Thunder Series (AVS) carbs
& progressive linkage.. OR the Stage 5 with two Eddy 650's and non progressive linkage. I had a 540 lift solid flat tappet on my 434
Hemi with the Stage 5 & two Eddy 600's (AFB) & ran great with non progressive linkage. I think the Barton single 4 intake & a big carb
would out perform the Vanke 2x4, but a Hemi always looks better, IMO,
with 2 fours. If you go the vanke route, I"m sure some of the Hemi gurus will chime in with the jetting & spark plug variations that balance them out.

Gotcha. Yes, this will be street driven and needs to fit under an Air Grabber hood. So I would like to use a stock air cleaner. Will the Vanke modification to the dual plane manifold demand that the progressive be eliminated?

I'm using the factory intake eddy carbs and linkage from Mancini. You can buy a steel baseplate to fit the eddy carbs also. This set up works fine on my 528 and still made 645 hp on Barton's dyno. I'm sure I could make more hp with another intake set up but this makes plenty for my street car and everything fits no hassles.

Re: Street Hemi Intake recommendations - 09/05/14 04:33 AM

Or, you could use a stock intake and try these. Hemi clone carbs, they are based on Edelbrock 600/750/800 cfm carbs, but use reconditioned original lids and reproduction Street Hemi throttle arms so that all factory air cleaners and small parts fit them as exactly as the factory carbs.

If you do the math on buying new unmodified Edelbrocks and associated custom parts to make them work you will likely find the above "clone" option to be very competitively priced and will offer very similar performance on the street.

MANY Pure Stock and FAST racers run these carbs on stock (or internally modified for FAST) Street Hemi intakes and make some HUGE HP numbers!

Single 4 barrel is too easy and wouldn't look right on a hemi. Vanke intake would work, I believe Arruzza likes the solid linkage with it. The hardest way, which would probably run the best, I guess would be the Stage V single plane with the aftermarket lower base and Scott's clone carbs. Nothing's easy.

I'd like to try AVS' on a Vanke if an Airgrabber is required. Especially if someone makes an Aircleaner for the bigger throats.
The Stage V has wider carb spacing and is I think a quarter inch higher, that's why it's a tough go with a factory airgrabber.

Here is a large throat base set up.

I think that guy has the decimal point in the wrong spot. LOL

Yeah, he is pretty proud of them.

They are pricey. I think I paid $300.00 for a swap meet 4bbl fresh air air cleaner set up. Then $300.00 to modify the base for the 2 4bbl's.

As for the stageV being higher than stock, I don't think so (notice I didn't say I KNEW). All I can say is that I have Zero hood interference, yet a buddy with stock intake and Eddy carbs, had to cut some hood bracing and couldn't clear the factory "Chrome Dome".
What about the "Marine" intake, this would allow larger carbs and I understand that bases are available for any factory style air cleaner?

How about an old Edelbrock Rat Roaster intake. Works really well on the street and takes the WOW factor way up.

Had one.....Talk about distribution issues....Mine I modded the heck out of, and still wasn't great. Made a full plenum 1" spacer, had one inch spacers under the carbs, had all the runners blended for shorter turn radius'...Carbs were modded as well. Jets & squirters were all hand drilled to my sizes and no chokes or anything. If I was going to keep it, I would have been making my own stepped metering rods for the carbs. Could never get them perfect.

Stage V intake is higher for sure, I just can't remember how much. I'm cutting apart a new Six Pack shaker base right now as a matter of fact to fit my AVS' on the Stage V. FHO makes a storebought one but my time and welder are free. I already modded the aircleaner lid for the different spacing.

Hi, The Stage V is 1/4 to 1/2 higher, The one that Aruza sells has been milled. Call to make sure.I think that is how he sold them a few years ago.I have a cuda with a shaker & a stage V. You don't have much room to run spacers on it. I made 836hp & 730 tq with a stage V with two thunder series carbs, of coarse I have more cubes than you. We also have a 472ci. street car with a stock intake & original carbs…….dont waste your time going that route. Do the stage V with the thunder carbs or scotts & never look back! I would call aruza to ask about the milled intake for extra space.

Interesting,...my Stage V intake was only 1/8" taller than my stock 66-67 intake, & didn't appear to be shaved, & wasn't from John.

I had John's modded Stage 5 with two Eddy 600's on my 434 & did have the
steel ropop shaker base from Tim Banning. Setup worked great. Wish I'd
have gone with the Thunder 650's but we still got the afb's running pretty
smoothly. Shaker fit well & only was bout 1/4"higher than with the
factory setup, but I also had small 1/8"spacers under the carbs.

Fwiw,...Stage V heads,covers,& intake. 650 Thunders. FHO lid. FHO base cut & fab'd on a factory skirt.

Mega K-member,mounts, & brackets.

Clears a flat 70 coronet hood by thiiiiis much.

I modified steel 6-pack baseplate for StageV intake and Edelbrocks. Fits under the hood on my -71 B-body with airgrabber.

Re: Street Hemi Intake recommendations - 10/13/14 02:34 PM

Hemi Ragtop,
I asked Ray Barton about using Holleys on my 528. He told me he could do it, but it required lots of work; carb mods and linkage issues. He didn't recommend it for my application. Using his std formula we got 704HP using the Stage V and two Edelbrocks. Rick Cassell sells the fuel line(#HO300 Hemi fuel line kit that looks factory but fits Edelbrocks with Stage V spacing. $165 when I bought it.
Barton milled 1/2inch off my Stage V intake to buy me some hood clearance (71 Barracuda, Schumaucher mounts, Rallye hood). The Stage V is taller. Dominic did a good comparison vs the Mopar 2x4 when it came out. The intake milling, plus the FHO dropbase barely offset the Schumacher height increase. I have 3/4 max clearance underhood.

If your not a purist, try the Indy modman intake with two Edelbrock carbs and there is two plastic adapters to step up from the small diameter hemi carbs to the larger Edelbrocks.
