Not a best, but a first!

Not a best, but a first! - 08/19/14 07:45 AM

Long story short, the new engine has some grunt compared to the old 451. Went to the local track Saturday to put a couple of hits on it and it ran pretty good for not changing the fuel set up from the last motor. First pass went good except with worrying about everything new in the motor, I forgot to turn the air shifter on and the 1-2 shift was late. Then I pulled the 2-3 shift early. With 26* timing it ran good and went 10.16. Next pass with 30* timing in it left extremely smooth and tripped the 60 ft clock with the rear tires with 1.466. Well the ride wasn't over there. As it continued to reach for the sky it was just starting to lay over in the top of first gear it clicked second and went the rest of the way up. By this time it was starting to cruise pretty good and I hear a VERY distinct scrapping sound of the rear valance on the track. The thing had started to drift towards the guard rail and I had to attempt pedaling it down. Well it didn't come down easy, but it wasn't on the guard rail. About a foot and a half between the car and rail. New diaper and my Charlie's pan are now wall hangers. Hind sight being 20/20, I should have tightened the front shocks up all the way and took some more of the travel away up front. Back to the shop. Beep

Ouch! Sounds like the new engine is making some steam. Good luck getting it figured out. Hopefully someone got some video for you!

If it isn't leaking a good body man, tin knocker, can probally fix that I don't know about the diaper I'm glad you save the rest of the car, take the time to look very closely at all of the front suspenion parts to see if any are damaged or not

MCIR??? It hooked that hard there?
I would love to see pictures/video of that sweet car on the back bumper! In fact get one blown up for me. I would love to hang it next to my little wheelie picture in the garage.
Hope you get it fixed for Norwalk also. I am working on getting my ready for Norwalk as well.

I will try to answer these in order.
The pictures don't show how bad the pan really is. It is worn thru in 2 places and buckled all the way around up at the rail. Pretty much wall art at this point.
Yep, you spy an indy low deck block. 529" to be exact. I have been working on it pretty consistently since winter time. I bought it hurt and went thru it and changed a few things, freshened a few things, and added what I like along the way. haven't even got a chance to do any tuning to it yet. Still have the injection set up for the 451 that was in the car. Smashed the pan on the second pass.
Yeah, I have wheelie bars for it but with the caltracs it unloads the tires at the hit if I have them on.
I went to MCIR. Hook was good. They have been using a reverse rotation tire drag and it is working. They are only running bracket races the weekends of their Q32 races. I was pleasantly surprised. Just a note, they are having another one this weekend. Oh, and I won't be back out yet. Just ordered another pan today.
Steve, I haven't got a soul that took any pics. Place was busy and no one took a picture. Including me, gopro on the cage was turned off. Duh! So if I find someone with a picture, I will burn you a copy.
The track owner and a friend of mine went out Monday evening and measured out to the marks from the landing. 230'

Dang, Jon.. Sorry to hear. Drive it like you stole it is only a saying. Over 200 feet !! Are you trying to beat Hemi Fred's wheelie? Great luck. Hope to see you at Norwalk.

I know they look ugly, but you might have to go with some old school bars that mount to the frame rails & point straight down. I am sure you recall John Brown's wheelie bars before he ditched the leaf springs on his green roadrunner. He went 9.20's on springs & tripped the 60' clocks with the back bumper very pass.
Do I see big back window cuda in the air show at the classic this year????
