Magic 8 ball says...."signs point to YES"

Think I'm gonna do my W2 combustion chambers valve faces and especially the exhaust ports.

He also has a thermal dispersant coating he recommended for the heads and intake, the only bad thing is its a dark grey color

Any experience with them? My turbo buddy swears it helps keep the heat where it's most needed and away where it's least needed. The exhaust ports are something Porsche does and it helps keep the motor running cooler.

I get my hughes CNC ported Indybrocks back from Calico thermal coating chambers valves, exhaust port on Monday

Signs point to yes, here too IMO.

Negative, on the thermal dispersant.

Dave, this is strictly a "friends and family" type deal (if we do it)...I'm not sure what he would charge otherwise.

I was kinda directing the question to jcc about the Calico coatings. But, if offered, any pricing and availability info would be helpful. As would any real world experiences with them.

Why? Something in particular about your engine combination that you believe requires that extra heat management?

I haven't seen much conclusive about TBCs being much of a benefit other than piston coatings for power-adder combos that try to melt the tops off of them.

At the start of the whole Engine Master Competition you'd see a bunch of builders using all that stuff looking for an edge. I've looked at the buildups for the winners over the last half dozen years and it appears those guys don't even bother with them anymore.

I'm interested particularly in coating the exhaust ports, it's a big motor and W2's tend to be crack prone....so reducing the cylinder head heat (partcularly around the center Siamese ports) might be worth it. Couldn't hurt and I always wanted to try it

If the pictures show the parts don't have any coatings on them, I think it's a pretty good conclusion the parts don't have any coatings on them.

Sorry for delayed response, it's been a tough week with computers.

Calico Thermal coating, new chambers, valve faces, back side of exhaust valve, and exhaust port $343.

My first experience with coatings was with Swain in 1992, on a SB Dvorvak build with thermal piston tops, and skirts with friction coating. I see little downside, except cost, I would likely do coating on any of my motors. I also think they are not discussed much by those who use them for maybe obvious reasons.

I would if doing more motors, I would learn the techniques to do coatings myself, but its not worth the learning curve IMo for the few I will have built.

That is not a lot of money for that and is something I would like to consider for my next build. So I have another question;

Do you have any reservations about coating the combustion chamber causing more heat to be reflected to the piston dome?

Coating the valves and the exhaust ports seems like a safe bet, though.

Well, heat is power, any heat kept in the chamber is a plus, alum heads suck the heat out of the chamber, not ideal, and why additional CR is capable usually with alum vs steel heads, I am not sure how much coatings reverse that. I plan on coated pistons with the chambers in my builds. I would think with E-85 it would be even more beneficial, but have nothing to back up that thought.
