piston pin question - 08/05/14 04:50 AM

Mahle piston .990 pin with wire retainers .. Now the question is that after the wire retainers are installed I have maby .015 or .020 movement by the pin from side to side . I have a set of JE in my Hemi with wire retainers and they have almost .000000 pin movement .. Have you ran the mahle pistons and did you have this much movement ? thanks .

I have a small amount...maybe .010 ..but the pin
isnt tight in there
EDIT
mine are a different brand but my CP and Diamond both
have a little movement

It is way better to have movement on wrist pins cold than it is to not have any movement cold I've seen duoble Tru Arcs kicked out of the retaining grooves due to to little end clearances on them It ruined the cylinder it happen to The engine asembler, a freind of mine, didn't know to check for end play on every pin back then As far as wire reatiners on Mahle brand piston I have no personel experiences with them, sorry The old Hemi and (I think) early Mopar V8 motors all used round 3/4 circumference wire retainers back when They had lots of end play on some of them also Contact Mahle tech. and ask them the minimums and maximum end play before telling them how much yours have

thanks cab I will call them tomorrow .. and maybe at running temp some of the clearance will be taken up . here is a pic of the piston .

Gotta have some clearence IMO, Your .015/.020 is about right. Shouldnt Ever be .00000 The pin will expand with heat.

well it not .00000 but the point is the Hemi has very little compared to this much but I am calling mahle today to see what they say and from opinion on here I will use them and be Ok with it . thanks

Stock 426 Hemi spec is .006"-.012". I assume your engine would want similar. If you are using wire keepers make sure you have the proper pins for that. That are different from all others. Instead of being flat on the ends the are chamfered. When the pin slides to one side the chamfer touches the wire and pushes it down against the groove instead of a flat end trying to push it out.

just hung up the phone and Mahle said .020 to .025 and did not have the pin expansion answer . But said all of their piston pin had wire locks and the clearance was .020 to .025 on all their applications . So I good with this piston and Mahle was very helpful in giving me information

WOW, that is a really short piston. What is the weight on each one?

460gr the tech at Mahle said that was approximately the size that they ran in Nascar . these piston are manufactured in Morristown , Tn.

NASCAR pistons that are coming up used on the 'bay all have the wire locks. The Spirolocks are going away. Double Tru-Arcs went away before them.

well I ok with the wire lock after wrestling with these wire to get them in place . I think the wire should be just a tad larger and the grove a tad deeper .

Difficult to install also means difficult to get out too, a good thing. I'll use oversize locks in some high piston speed cases, put the gaps at 6 o'clock.

I have already installed the wire keepers and I put them just past the notch that is used to remove the wire if necessary .. thanks for the info .
