V10 in 64 valiant - 07/18/14 07:24 PM

I have a couple early valiant's. I have always planned on a street car/ daily driver, restored v8 4spd, and a streetable race car. For the street car I thought of putting a magnum motor with overdrive and fuel injection but now have thought of putting a v10 in it instead. Has anyone else used one before. I measured my dad's truck engine and it appears to be able to fit. My only concerns are the exhaust, oil pan and opening up the transmission tunnel for clearance.

Plus the 800? lb weight of the cast iron V10.

Take it from one who has a garage full of parts made obsolete by later engine designs, go straight to a Generation 3 Hemi and don't look back. That engine goes 1 hp per pound very easily. The iron V10 is long and heavy and would work much better under the hood of a 1950 Chrysler New Yorker.

We put a 427 inch small block in Tim's red Valiant a few years back. The 427 inch small block had the same power curves as an early Viper engine but was much smaller and lighter.

I made a Jaguar V12 installation in a 65 Valiant 27 years ago, with twin turbos. It was a tight fit, and needed to relocate the brake master/power, alter the inner fenders, make a custom radiator fit inside the opening, and firewall changes. Weight distribution was bad. A stroked small block is a much better solution, my

The engine fits better than you would think because it is basically a skirted small block with two extra cylinders. Magnum motors are shorter than an older small block because of the shorter water pump and no fuel pump eccentric. The V10 is only a couple of inches longer than an old small block. It is of course for a daily driver I have a set of w5 heads and an r block for my other car. I have a 340 with w2 heads already in my other other car I would like to take out and restore being a factory v8 4spd 2dr hard top signet 200 red on red. I am finally finishing up my 1500sqft addition after several years and will have the space in my garage as well as finances to do several things that have been put on hold for years. With all that said how heavy is a v10 I know the 4sp auto is a bit heavier but is it that much more than a slant 6 with cast iron everything. They even have magnesium valve covers.

I wouldn't do it. I love the power of my V10 Ram but would never consider swapping it into anything after owning one. They get about 9mpg loaded or not and only make around 310hp. Yeah so it makes 450ftlb but for the shear weight and lack of any aftermarket parts except cam and headers, I would swap anything but that into the Valiant

work.. looked cool but it sure was full up front..
I dont know who installed it weather it was guys at
Chrysler did it or a outside company... it was the

dam that thing sounds like a lawm mower until it goes into boost, then it sounds like a jet. Wonder how a pair of turbos would work on my 540i

Watching that makes me wonder why BMW doesn't have a 3-series (4-series now) coupe Pro Stock car in NHRA. They are clearly a part of the new muscle car era

Re: V10 in 64 valiant - 07/19/14 11:35 PM

for a daily driver, i think that v10 would be nice... killer torque on 87 octane crap.....throw some 2.76's in the rear and hit the highway, just too bad those v10's sound dumb and are so heavy.
I can't imagine the fuel mileage being as horrendous as it is in a pickup truck.

To keep it injected he will have to pull ALL of the
wiring and the computer.. thats the way I would go
EDIT
And I would go with the trans also.. in a light car
it will get good mileage with OD and lock up

Re: V10 in 64 valiant - 07/20/14 12:52 AM

Well that was my thought. I wanted to do a magnum motor w/ac but the v10 seem to be easier to find with low miles. I have found a few trucks around 100,000 miles for $1600. I could rip out everything I need and sell or scrap the rest. The rear sump pan might be a small problem the trans tunnel will need work but that would be the same on either. I am going to have to play with the fuel pump. The factory has a built in regulator so I need to either find a way of using it in a fuel cell in the trunk or use a different regulator. I am concerned about the weight and the clearance for the exhaust manifolds. I am hoping they will fit if not I have seen cheap headers on ebay that I could modify to fit. Does anyone know what the weight actually is on the complete motor.

I would think the worst thing would be trying to get headers in it. They are a challenge even with a small block.
