Same turbo I now have..... I just got mine fired up last weekend with the new BW Bullseye S480 with 1.32AR, changing converter today & hopefully can get it out & see how it spools.

What CID?
Cam specs?
What size primaries & collectors did you end up going with?

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 01/01/09 04:40 PM

From what I can see on the topside of that motor, you will be using that turbos potential up fairly easy!
Posted By: cudaman1967

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 01/01/09 06:32 PM

Not sure yet on the bore it will be no bigger than 446. The new block is over at the machine shop as of Monday. Mach Machine does all my machine work. He builds alot of nitrous pro mod motors. The cam is is a lunati solid. Mach hooked me up with his guy Steve at Lunati who does lots of turbo grinds.
Primaries are 2" into a 3" collector. The crossover will also be 3".
Converters are tricky with turbos. If you need help with that let me know. I have guru that has special converters he does for turbo cars.

Cool, looks good. Wish mine had all that room around front end. I like the way you did the turbo mount also with the T6 flange.

I gotta fix my wastegate I pegged the gauge at 20 PSI twice yesterday

You won't have any trouble spooling that S480, mine is putting out around 3 PSI at 2500 RPM & my exhaust system is way way too big & only 394 inches. Boost is definitely addicting.... turns a mild mannered motor into a video game like animal.

Power? not a problem... keeping it on the road & out of the ditches... may be a problem

Kevin at CSU is doing a dominator for it. That is my alcohol Dominator on it that I bracket race with for mocking up.

Gasoline on the street with water/meth injection, race gas at track. 15-20psi at the track, 8psi around town. You will start to see more and more dominators as time goes on. They are starting to find they work well even on lower HP motors (1000hp or less)

Looks good! Good thing you left room for another turbo. My guess is you'll be adding another once you get that setup working.

Here's a video of a rear mounted twin turbo we tuned recently.

I'm hooked. Looking to put twin trunk mounted ht60's on the GTX once I get this 446 up and running. Planning on going blow through on a dominator also. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Cudaman,

There are 2 water injections that work very well.

One the Supercahrger Store sells, the other Steve at New Era Racecraft sells.

I dont know the name of the one from The Supercharger store but Jay Leno put it on that crazy twin turbo thing he built, and www.alcoholinjectionsystems.com is the other

HP is relative to alot of things size of manifold, head flows, cam etc... They say good to 1500 hp but reality is like 1200 like topfuedart says.

I am looking to push around 900hp. Not looking to shock the world. Have run 9.40's to 9.50's for years NA. So would like to get it into the 8's now with the turbo and drive it and have fun

Update: The turbo Cuda build - 09/15/09 01:28 AM

Well I am 90 percent there. Working the bugs out. It is unreal!!! Faster than my alcohol 9.40 motor on the pump and water/meth with only 7lb of boost.

Need to get painted once the bugs are all worked out. I have put almost 100 miles on it. Rides smooth! Need to put the mesh grill in and do the body work.

I am thinking DP50 satin black. Thoughts?

All that work and you want to paint it one color
off of flat black (yes, satin black is to close to
flat black). Toss on some House of Kolors Chrome
Black, or give it a Candy Tangerine look. Change
it up a bit like a Candy Pearl Teal.
Anything but (ratrod) (flat) satin black.
But then again it's your choice in the end.

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 11/23/09 05:41 PM

Made it to the track finally after driving it around and tuning on street. So far have put 600 miles on motor and REALLY Happy with the results!!

Setup was very conservative. I knew going I could had to much gear 4.88 so on REV limiter at 1000ft and had to lift.

So:
14lbs boost
19 degrees timing at 14lbs
shift at 6600
AFR PERFECT 11.5
Converter ONLY dropping 100rpms on shift! To loose!!
ON REV LIMITER AT 1000ft 7400rpm. Lifting at 1000 and drifting through

60ft 1.33
1/8 5.83
mph 120.1
1000ft 7.60
lifting at 1000ft 9.139 144.58 mph

Solid 8 second street car! Changing gears this winter and tighten the converter up a small bit.

CSU! Kevin did a dominator for me.I wouldnt go any where else. Only thing I did to it was lean the primary out 4 jets and adjust the special rear powervalve he invented and AFR;s dead on 11.5
Posted By: jyrki

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 11/24/09 08:35 AM

Less stall, and you may have troubles getting the turbos to spool. The converter is propably the most difficult thing in the turbo cars to get right, we had a pretty good luck with it. The first version was against the limiter all the way, but spooled very quickly and still run well (8.13). Then after tightening the rpm drops from 7100 shift point to 6200, but it now takes about a second+ to get the boost up enough for a decent leave. First since you have no boost, there is no torque, and the converter should slip, then with boost the tq doubles and the converter should hold, it's a difficult task. I would also say that you are very cautious with your spark advance, we have almost 10 degrees more with 14 psi. Of course too little is propably better than too much though.
Posted By: cudaman1967

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 11/24/09 01:31 PM

Well I wanted to be safe with the timing. I have it locked at 40 degrees and pulling 1.5 degrees per pound of boost. I have been taking baby steps the whole way just to make sure I do not hurt the motor. I will play with timimg once I get the gear changed.
As far as the converter you are right it is the hardest part. Luckly my buddy that does my converters was with me Saturday looking at the converter data on the computer.
I am not changing 2 things at once for sure. Starting with gears. Then go back to track and look at the data again.
What size tire do you run and what gear? Also what is your finish line rpm?

I had talked to him about doing mine a while back. Did he convert yours or did you buy new direct from him. That is good to hear though

He convertered and old 1050 I had. It is so smooth to drive. I drive it almost every weekend. Two pumps of gas and fires up and idles.

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 11/24/09 03:32 PM

Our basic timing is 40 degrees initial, and it comes down by a little under 1 degree / psi so that at imaginary 26 psi there should be 20 degrees.
Our gear ratio is 4.10, tires are 18.5/33 ET Streets and against the 7500 rpm limiter through the traps at 175 mph. We tried and actually succeeded to lower the converter stall about 500 rpm with oil change; went to SAE 80 wt oil in the trans. Itäs similar to John Deere Hy Gard, but thick and it worked. Of course we couldn't get everything out of the trans, so it's propably about 1/3 ATF and 1/3 SAE 80. Even with teh tightened converter we still use the same fluid, ATF only for colour. The trans internals looked good the last time it was down.

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 11/24/09 04:38 PM

Interesting. One thing I do notice it doesnt seem to pull at the upper rpm range. My NA motors always like 7400 rpm. This flat tappet and turbo deal doesnt seem too.

Now is that because of the cam or because of timing so far retarded. Needless to say on the rev limiter by 1000ft at 7400 so needs a gear change. Question is 4.56(which I have on the shelf) or 4.30 or 4.10

I will also play with the converter next year. Nice to have a guy do my stall changes for free...

Mine were same distance... I had two bungs, one for my ecu and a second for LM1. Never had a problem.

I have mine close to the turbo flange I know they say not to but its been there for over 2 years with alot of passes with c16 and still working fine.

can we see more on your turbo car?

I don't want to hijack this post.... so I started another one My new turbo setup. That pic above was of my old turbo setup from a couple years ago, now I'm finishing up the new setup, which you can see in the post.

speaking of pulling at upper rpms....you definetly need more compressor wheel and turbine wheel at that....you have a fairly big motor from what I remember and very good flowing heads.....I would imagine with the 80mm turbo you are flatlining power at around 6500 rpm if not less....

Definetly cool looking barracuda, and put down some very good #'s

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/06/09 03:54 PM

I am considering a turbo for my Indy -1 498 motor I have. If I may ask, roughly, how much did it cost you to run the turbo (exclude motor costs)?

Are you happy with blow through? Any intercooler? What gas are you having to use?
Posted By: cudaman1967

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/08/09 05:05 AM

the blow through is awesome! Not one issue afr's are perfect! No intercooler I use labonte motorsports water/meth spray.
Excluding motor, trans, fuel etc. Just turbo, piping work, bonnet, flanges, all the fab work for the radiator and turbo mount. About 5-6K. I kept track on everything so let me know if you want to know all

Do your research it will pay off! Make sure you follow the basics though. Fuel system is very important and also is data logging. Let me know if you have questions.

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/11/09 02:10 PM

How is the driveability with the blow through? I heard that for race, they work great but driveability can be poor.

Who did your carb and did you purchase one or sent yours out? how much?

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/11/09 06:09 PM

Driveablity is awesome!! I have put 600 miles on it. Drive it almost every weekend. I had CSU do it and the afr's are perfect, great cruising, PERFECT underload. I sent him a 1050 dominator I had. Cost $650 to modify mine. In my mind WELL worth the money. Zero issues!
Posted By: TheOtherDodge

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/11/09 07:21 PM

Great, I will send him mine, though it is a 950hp. But $600 seems like a lot! Maybe I should just buy one from them and sell mine?

Re: Update: The turbo Cuda build - 12/12/09 10:55 AM

Hi, awesome build!
As to the colour, well I think it would look cool a dark pearl purple with satin black stripes of some sort. JMHO but I'm sort of biased to purple anyway

$600 is a lot...we get $450 to boost prep carbs.

Re: The turbo Cuda build has begun - 12/12/09 06:36 PM

Well I guess all I can say is I read on turbo forums with lots of people with all kind of blow through problems trying to do it them selves and trying to save a buck here or there. My experience best $650 I ever spent. Bolt on and fired right up. Had to make one jet change and at 14lbs perfect 11.5 afr. I couldnt ask for more. But CSU is considered one of the best in the business. Thats my
