belt drive oil leak

belt drive oil leak - 07/05/14 02:23 AM

hello all
time to fix an oil leak. there is oil coming from behind the dampner and looks like it is coming from the seal around the crank hub for the belt drive. the belt drive is one of those Australian piece's. am I going to have to pull the seal or can I get by by reinstalling the dampner with some silicon around it?

replace the seal, it's not hard to do. I replaced mine last year as it was starting to weep a bit.

where did you get your seal? what did you have to do to get the seal out? i still have the water pump and radiator in and i was hoping to not have to pull those out.

bad news dude, you gotta take them off. set your engine up on TDC, mark the belt against the pulleys in at least 2 places on each pulley. pop the plate off & press out the old seal & press another back in. it's a common seal I bought at an engineering shop. line the dots up on the belt & your pulleys so your timing is back in the same spot. tighten everything & recheck, put the pump back on with the damper & you're done. if you have a press or large vice the job should only take 2 hours.

ok thanks man. when I first put it together I replace the seal that i got from an engineering shop that specializes in seals, so I wasn't sure if there was a more specific seal I need to get. this seal only has about 800 miles max on it, so I am not sure why it is leaking. looks like i'll plan on pulling the front of the engine a part soon.

has your block been line bored? if it has there's a good chance of a leak since the centerlines will be closer than manufacturers specs. ask me how I know.

if your blocks been line bored you can buy another seal that has the same sized internal lip but the outter dimension is larger. you'll have to work out how much they carved off to line bore the block & get this new seal milled to match the new centreline. sounds like a lot of work but it's not that bad. any machinist can make this fit for you relatively cheap. it means that this cambelt plate is now custom to your engine. the idler wheel will take up the slack on the belt.
