vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 12/31/08 02:52 AM

do the Moroso drives have the pulleys "stacked" with a key way? this way they can be moved around to match up with the way your pump is mounted???

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 12/31/08 03:23 AM

Does the moroso unit go over the stock crank bolt? I am asking because the one I have uses the mandrel bolt to hold the dampner, but it keeps loosening up. So I am looking for another type or buliding my own. Thanks

the dampner is bolted down by the center bolt

6 alen bolts bolt the hub to the dampner

the long bolt threads into the hub

Tony I just ordered all Moroso stuff. The 4 vane enhanced pump sounded like the ticket, so that's the way I went. This costs a few bucks, so I hope it's worth it? Dave.

i picked up a Star pump and all the parts needed, except for the drive...I have not ran a pump yet, its supposed to help a lot. We see what happens, theres also that second fogger im starting to collect parts for...

I wouldn't waste my time with the Moroso. Just get the Star mandrel and you will be happy. They are also real good at telling you exactly what ratio/pulleys you should be running as well. I like the star unit since I can use the captive nut on the end to turn to motor over without taking anything else off the front.

I didn't like the Moroso drive setup since it is so big and heavy but there really aren't many other choices available. I ended up building my own drive setup for the dry sump.

Unless they're making them now, star doesn't make a mandrel for a chrysler balancer, unless you have a Chevy front on it. The star mandrels are fantastic.

Here is the drive that I made. It is a spline drive rather than a shaft with a key but it works basically the same way. In this picture it is set up with just the one Gilmer pulley but it can be stacked with V groove pulleys as well. Peterson sells the spline drive stuff and they have spacers, pulleys, etc that all can be stacked in any order.

I have Petersen spline drive as well on mine. Very nice stuff.

You sly dog! Your up to no good! The Aerospace components drive looks good too, but I don't know if they have a chrysler drive? I have a couple chevy friends that have Musi motors, they both have enhanced 4 vane moroso pumps, that will pull all the vacuum you want. The star products look great too.

CV products makes really nice pulleys and drives. there crank pulleys and mandrel drives are pin drive. you can build any configuration you can think of. check out there web site.that star products is top of the line though! they have an electric vacuum pump that the pro stock guys use, mounts on the floor in the car but its 1600.00.

Ya that's nice! How do you set valves etc? How do you rotate the motor?

Ari is right...i have a push button in the engine bay that's wired to the starter relay. gotta be sure the ignition is off when bumping the starter

The CV stuff is strong enough to bar the motor over still. I don't think id try that on a moroso.

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 01/01/09 01:19 PM

I have one from CV Products. They can be stacked up with any configuration and pulley combination. I have a gilmer for the pump and a V pulley on the alternator. There is a hex cap for the end to turn the motor over by hand. They will work with a mopar 6 bolt pattern.

with the moter in the car all the junk in front of it , its hard to put a wrench or bar to turn the moter over

a starter butten is easy

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 01/01/09 04:25 PM

If your only using a starter button, how do u roll the motor to put converter bolts in? Just curious.
Posted By: Ari440

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 01/01/09 04:34 PM

use a wrench on the converter bolt to line up close to the block and the next bolt will show up on the other side

ALSO

the starter butten I use is hand held

you can turn the moter over that way too

where did you buy this?? CV website is a little confusing...this looks like what i need

Yeah, the CV products website is useless. I think their catalog is okay but their website is impossible to navigate.

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 01/02/09 01:04 AM

I talked to someone one the phone. It took 2 orders to get everything correct. I think ArtAti works there now. You can get spacers in various widths and any pulley combo you want.

I was just a little leary of cranking a motor without all the converter bolts in, but sounds like u guys have been ok doing it. I guess with two bolts in it should work fine. Sounds easier then baring a motor over by hand.

Re: vac pump Mandrel drive question??? - 01/02/09 02:50 AM

I know one thing for sure. The Moroso one I bought recently was terrible.

The bolt was too short, or the pilot was too long, or the Hex with the keyway was not machined deep enough. They had 3 ways to get it right, and they missed em all.

Then when I finally got everything set up, the stupid heli-coil pulled out of the hub. The good news was the thread for the 7/16" NF heli coil was 1/2" NF, so all I needed was to go get another 5" bolt.

the whole episode was a test of my patience and ability to laugh. never again.
