2295s on LYs and balancing

2295s on LYs and balancing - 05/26/14 03:28 AM

Iv read that when using the trw 2295 piston on the old six pack rods a balance job will require adding mallory weight to the crank, but what about when using the 2295s on the LY rod, is adding weight still needed?

Usually not.

Anytime you change one componentlike the rods or pistons, even the wrist pins in the rotating assembly you should have it check for balance The factory pistons are heavy, so are the six pak rods, but in a different place You have two different weights that are looked at and measured when balancing rotating masses, the recpricating(SP) and the actual weights of each component are matched so they weigh the same as the lightest individual components in the crank assembly, all rods weigh the same on both ends, all pistons, wrist pins, rings, bearings and so on weigh the same

it is my intention to get a balance done on this assembly I just was not sure if moly needed to be added when using this rod and piston together,

thank you both for the replys

With the sixpac rods and 2295s on a crank that was balanced for the LY and a lighter piston combo you may need Mallory weight if the total bobweight exceeds 20 grams. It depends on how much weight was removed from the crank on the previous balance.

oh ok, just to clarify this is a complete different build. I am not changing from six pac to ly rods. the 2295s have all been balanced to the same as have the LY rods as well as shot peened, aftermarket bolts & resized etc etc. the factory fordged crank is ground .010 on all journals, the set just needs to be balanced complete.

This is the question, right?

I'd go with the "Usually not" response

I should have stated that on a stock BB Mopar forged steel crank that was internally balanced at the factory you may need to have some of the balance holes welded up with those parts, some of them, not all of them I've built a bunch of 440 with those parts, I'm sure almost all of them had metal added by welding in the balance holes, some probally had some additional metal removed by drilling the counterweights also

The original question was Mallory weight needed? You won't know till the bobweight is calculated and the crank is spun on the balancing machine.

This is the correct answer ...
