R3 9.00 Deck Cooling - 05/14/14 12:49 AM

Just wondering how these blocks cool with the water pump holes in the front of the block half blocked off. Because I just purchased a complete motor and wanted to know in advance,,,thanks

There are a lot of " tricks " you can do to these to facilitate cooling.
Most are laid out in the How to build Big Inch Small Block MoPar's book.
I tapped and plugged the holes going up to the heads from the ends of the deck and drilled them out to 1/8" to force more coolant up through the center of the head.
I am using a remote pump and the coolant enters the block through the center core plugs too.
I didn't mess with trying to drill between the bores , but if I was going to burn gas , I might have considered it.
This is for a dual purpose motor though......if you are not going to drive on the street or in circles , I think a lot of it is over kill.

When I first built my R3 W-9 it was on gas and it never
had any heat issues(it was a drag race only car)...
what will the engine be used for... I did drill and
tap the top centers on each side of the block but never
needed any more cooling and when I switched over to
E-85 I had to run it in the lanes to keep the temp up

I drive a 900hp W8 headed 9.00 deck R3 on the street with zero cooling issues.

I have traveled over 30 miles on a summer evening, with a combination of highway and city, including a few illegal displays of acceleration and the temp never topped 180*.

I won't be near 900 h.p. , but if I can scare the women and children , I'll be perfectly happy.
