Need help finishing off inside of enclosed car trailer - 12/29/08 02:37 AM

I just picked up a used 28ft enclosed trailer. It is not finished inside. Where would be a good place to buy cabinets, etc.? Anyone done this? Any recomendations and/or pictures would be appreciated.

Steve, are the walls done or is it studs and outter skin.
Home depot or maybe craigslist for cabinets. My old
trailer, I found some used cabinets local to me, a
guy was remodeling some apartments and he had a pile
to pick from then I bought a counter top at Home
Depot. If you need wall material I would call the
trailer places in Indiana. I just re-did my currant
trailer and bought the white alum for the walls and
ceiling(about $800 in alum)

Hi Mike,

Its just studs and outer skin... I actually thought about doing exactly what you did with the diamond plate on bottom. I was thinking I might be able to use the stuff that is used in bathrooms... that shiny white "stuff".

I would consider plywood on the walls and then the bathroom wall stuff on top of the plywood.I have diamondplate floor but next time I would go with the rubber coin floor.Another way to do the walls is the plywood and garage floor paint on it or carpet halfway up.The plywood is important to hang all the crap you end up with on the walls and you dont have to look for a steel stud .

Yes... I should have said that. Plywood is real important.

BTW - What is "rubber coin floor"

Its rubber with circles on the top very durable doesnt blind you when its sunny outside and can be found at home-improvement stores.Check out a race trailer website and you can see photos of it inside trailers

Do most people insulate the walls?

If your talking the white press board stuff... dont.
I tore that stuff down(I put that up first) because
if it gets wet.... it gets bad and buckles... but
I had a roof leak... which I fixed. I bought the
diamond plate from Jack Moore here on the board,
he's in the Columbus area.... very good price and
he also can get the white alum... I'd talk to him
FIRST. Make sure you insulate it also, I used 1"
of the blue styfofoam on the walls and ceiling

I didnt insulate mine but the plywood is insulation enough if you get a air conditioner.PS wire the trailer for 240 before you do anything else.

No Im talking about the real thin shiny white stuff they use in bathrooms. You have to glue it to the walls. Im not sure if its actually plastic or not.

Re: Need help finishing off inside of enclosed car trai - 12/29/08 04:05 AM

This is similar to what what my trailer looked like when new..

Then the mods..

1) Epoxy paint.. needed 2 gallons ($120-ish)

2) White paint on the wood panel, grey indoor/outdoor carpet on the lower half, trim and misc hardware ($200ish)

3) Cheap plastic cabinets from Home Depot.. ($175-ish)

4) Misc trailer caddy stuff bought from Summit Racing ($400-ish)

The trailer is still not finished, as I want to re-arrange stuff and install the tool box..

THE CABINETS

My trailer was pretty much finished on the inside, but I did add a bunch of E-Track and E-Track clips to the walls so I could strap stuff in easier.

the white stuff used in commercial bathrooms is Fiberglass reinforced panels (FRP). We normally glue it to drywall but it would adhere to plywood as well. It is fairly expensive. I would paint the walls white and use grey carpet up 3 or 4 feet. I don't think insulation is critical in your area unless you plan to use it in winter. If you are worried about too much heat do the ceiling

Here is how I did one recently. Total cost of materials about $500

What did you use for trim on the floor, ceiling and top of carpet?

Do you glue the carpet on? If so, did you just use liquid nails?

I had my floor painted with grey paint, but carpeted it last year. Makes it nice when the car is out as we often use the trailer for a living space at the track. I prefer the wood panel walls. Easy to hang stuff as mentioned, and won't scuff/dent easily like the aluminum interiors.

Here's some toys:

I've bought a few items from these guys as they are right up the road from me in Vegas.

After looking at the trailer a little closer, the ceiling is not finished at all but the sides do have some thin wood on the walls. The ceiling is rounded... its a US Cargo trailer.

Any other ideas?

You can use luan, it'll form to the ceiling then cover it
if you want or paint
EDIT
Or you can 45* the wall to the ceiling, my old trailer
was like that, about 6" down the wall and 6" out on the ceiling

Re: Need help finishing off inside of enclosed car trailer - 12/30/08 03:54 AM

Plan your outlets and lighting while doing it. I wired mine a couple of years ago and just added a stereo this fall. I got tired of not being able to hear the track anouncer so I put a car cd/reciever in the cabinets with 2 speakers in the ceiling just inside the door. Next on my list is to install the 6500 watt Onan generator I scored on ebay for 350 bucks and plumb some air lines inside and out. Beep

I reused the trim at bottom of wall/floor transition. Top of carpet I bought trim at home depot in the flooring dept. where I got the linoleum.

Yes it is carpet glue that comes in 2-3gal buckets. Apply glue to area with notched trowel, then I would stick the carpet on and staple the top edge to prevent any movement while glue sets up. Apply trim.

I work for Rhino Linings and it is a bare to clean on an old floor if you have a oil leak. I personally would use the garage floor coating from Home Depot or U Coat It.

This was the reason I put the diamond plate down
on the floor, you dont have to worry if the paint
will stick and also the plate is easy to clean even
if you had a oil leak(blown engine)

I put some pics of mine...
I ordered it with cabinets/work bench,,floor treatment,,and wall/ceiling covering...
I like the flooring,,,kinda marble like stuff,,linoliem ?,,,wipes up easy,,,
I have since put down some more diamond plating running into the trailer,,,for the tires so they dont chew up the flooring ,,,
Also put in a S4000 winch,,and a I-Home(25$) on ebay,,,so i can hear the announcer,,,and play my ipod...

Looks like 69Charger and I have similar tastes. I too have a Warn S4000 winch, but I went ghetto with the old boombox. Anyway here is my new one..

My old trailer I carpeted the inside floors. Actually I think I prefer the carpet to the linoleum I currently have. I was going to go with rubber coin but have a couple of buddies who have had it come up. On my wood floor I used some Home Depot trim on the bottom and for any entry point we simply used some aluminum angle.

Looks like I am also going to have to replace a couple of the exterior panels. He ran into them with his motorhome. Anyone ever done this? Should I just take it back to the factory and have them fix it? Any idea what the aluminum costs to fix? I have two aluminum panels and one diamond plate panel on the front to replace.

I'd be interested in knowing how hard/costly it is to replace an aluminum panel...
