Milodon 27500 - Hemi Spark Plug Tube Seals question - 03/16/14 11:30 AM

I have some Dual Plug Hemi Aluminium Heads Part # P3690038 Casting # 3614433 & I want to fit some Milodon # 27500 Spark Plug Tube Seals. I have heard that these seals have to be individually modified to fit each plug hole but I'm wondering if I can machine the heads rather than the seal inserts so the inserts fit without any modification at all. Is there enough alloy in these heads to machine them the minimum amount to fit the seal inserts without cutting into or getting too close to the water jackets.

Thanks

You really want to machine your heads to use the seals?
I was under the impression they were just a press fit.
I bought a set for the Coronet and have not installed them yet.

Some areas interfere with the stands.I would not remove too much material from either the stands or head.

I put them in the freezer for awhile then took a large wooden dowel the right size and gently tapped them in , no problem.

Thanks guys, great answers & I'll have a close look at the stand clearance Bob.

As an Engineer I was worried about the seal inserts not going in straight as the top of the bore they press into is way higher on one side than the other. Maybe I'll machine a screw in guide to hold them dead straight/square while I tap them in with a correctly sized tube.

Mine are a bit used I guess, I can gently push them in by hand. I don't use them on the Stage V's anyway but one the iron heads I have they push in easily.

It looks like mine are a good press fit but I will probably use a small amount of Loctite or hydraulic sealant, its just getting them nice & square in the hole that worries me as I don't want them to tip on an angle when the shoulder on the seal insert makes contact with the angled casting.

As Bob said - I had some slight interference with the tube seals and my aluminum stands

Chose to modify the seals vs grind the heads or stands themselves

Put the inserts in the freezer and have had no issues with them

Some of the newer design heads that have provisions for daul plug but not machined for them are heavely cast and will not accept the Milodon oil seals with out extensive grinding on the head.
