No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 12/27/13 05:29 PM

Here is my recreation I am building.I used the original Plaza fiberglass parts and build photos from the winter of 1965 when the car was altered.I also have the full history on the car from new,Gene Snow was the first owner,it started out as his 64 A864 HEMI Savoy.

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 12/27/13 10:14 PM

Back in the late 70's we bought a 64 Dart post that had the wheels moved forward & was painted Purple metalflake with more goldleaf than a lowrider

The car wore the name "Purple Passion" & had been raced in the DC/Baltimore area

I may have a pic of it or two before we stripped it & sold the body

I helped sell my cousins (idrivevintage) 1966 Coronet on ebay this past spring. Buyer was super excited about it, but didn't know which way he was going to go with it. I said I would throw a stroker motor in it since it already was a BB car and it already had good enough "patina" to make it a sleeper of sorts. Last I checked, it looked like this:
Here is this timeline of where he is at on it:
(edit:oops this would be just straight axle, I dont think he is messing with wheelbase actually. whoops)

I say go for it!

I'm sure you will have to have a Lexan rear window, as it will probably need some bars ran from a roll cage to the rear frame to keep frame twisting d to a minimum.

Or as mentioned using a Ramcharger.

Either way I would love to have one someday.

The New Yorker started out with a 124" wheelbase. Chrysler stretched it to 127" and called it the Imperial.

if any thing, lets peek at the true semi-first factory effort altered wheel base cars starting in 1964. I say "semi" because I believe the "High and Mighty" was the true first altered base car.
Here's one of only four 2% cars made by the old Chrysler corporation. Two Dodges and two Plymouths.

Neat thread! OK, now I gotta ask - HAS ANYBODY EVER HEARD OF AN A/FX'er called the APPLE BLOSSOM? We had a chance to buy this car in Las Cruces, NM. back in the mid-80's. It was a stripped body shell with doors - no front clip & no suspension. I've posted about this car before here plus asked people I know about this car, & nobody has ever heard about it. As I recall, it was a '64 Plymouth Belvidere. I do have a picture of it somewhere & had scanned it several years ago, but can't locate it right now.

I know 65's received major alterations, but how did they get 2% out of the 64's. I always wondered that. Was it just a mater of moving everything forward? Anyone have side shots of any of these cars? Not to steal the thread.

Yes correct. It was a very early car. Probably the first from the batch being that it did not even have its trade mark "Wide mouth Hemi scoop" yet.
The other Plymouth of which I could not get a flick of was the "Lawman" Plymouth Savoy.

They made another batch of four cars in 1965' as well just before they went full out with the 10/15% cars that we all know now.

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 02:36 AM

Miniscule movement front ward. IIRC I think it was 3 or 4" inches up front and 4" inches out back. A little fender trimming had to be had on the couple of them. But it was covert for its time. No one really noticed.
Dick Landy did his own 1964 modifications and was supposedly first in line, but that is left to argument. Since it was Jim Thorton and Hoover that were closest to the Ramchargers, I can argue that their car was probably the first.

Yep - I stand corrected. What do you guys think something like that would bring today - as we found it? No front sheetmetal, no suspension, no interior - it was sitting on jack stands. Doors, roof, & the rear. Let's assume he had the title for it? (I just want to see how bad I should feel for not buying it!)

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 03:54 AM

For whatever reason the altered wheelbase cars are almost taboo. I starting building one last year and still tinker with it from time to time. A few of the purist's gouged me a new one on another forum because every little thing that was done was not correct in their minds. Build what you want to build and enjoy it accordingly. These cars are cool to this day and contrary to what most believe no two were alike 50 years ago. I think the production #'s were around 15 for the 10-15 cars. Not sure about the 2%, maybe 4? That means that there were maybe 20 cars out there that were factory produced? Few of us in this day and age can afford to own any of the original cars. I know I never could. I have a build thread titled 65 Coronet AWB build in the Projects and Survivor section that details the progress on mine from the beginning. Newer pics will be added soon as I have managed to get back to work on it for awhile. Attached is a pic of the rear relocation and mock-up of the rear suspension.

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 04:50 AM

OK, here's the deal: only 1 10"/15" '65 Sedan was considered factory at the time (Flynn's Dodge by Branstner): the S&M sedan was originally an RO car converted partly by S&M & partly by Branstner. The '64 "2%" cars were actually a bit more than 2%, and several were built, in HT & sedan configurations. Those seem to all have been MW HTs or Hemi sedans. Dodges used the Plymouth wheelbase (1" shorter). Part of that deal was a lightened stainless K, which Chrysler later recalled from the teams.
For '65, only 4 "2%" HTs were built (2 Dodge & 2 Plymouth), one of which (Melrose Missile VII) was soon converted to a 10"/15" AWB.
The "2%" refers to the NHRA rulebook "fudge-factor" allowance of the time, which predictably was exceeded in typical racer practice!
No doubt parts were swapped among different cars, and of course many non-factory 10/15 cars were built fresh or from earlier MW/RO/WO ("A990") cars.

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 04:58 AM

Yes, as records show, In 1965, there were a dozen 10/15 Hardtop cars plus one off beat 2dr Sedan contracted to the Dick Branstner in Detroit and (corrected) Alexander Bros for paint)for the one and only altered sedan body. "The Yankee Peddler"
These 10/15 cars are the current day Funny car ancestor mules. All wearing fiberglass fenders, hood and special raised Hemi scoop, doors, Bumpers, dashboard and deck lid. Plexiglass for windows etc.
Prior to that, there were four 65' Hemi Hardtop 2% cars as a teaser using the thin gauge steel fenders, hoods and doors.
In 1964, there were four or so Sedan 2% Hemis built using aluminum fenders, hoods, scoop, doors dashboard, bumpers, misc brackets. Very light.

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 05:38 AM

Yup, the '65 2% HTs used an aluminum extrusion for the upper door frames, with another one used at the leading edge of the quarter "glass". 1-piece 'glass dashes (no glovebox).
I show 11 10/15 HTs including the mule car, which was apparently destroyed and was the only HT not acid-dipped; the rest were dipped in varying amounts owing to the process at the time. When Chrysler brought the teams in to view & pick their 10/15 cars (photos exist), they picked among the ones there according to their Plymouth or Dodge deals. Seems that Landy's & Golden Commandos' cars were the lightest/most dipped, as there are pics of them being buckled at the door/quarter area. Weird history: Lee Smith's car was found with a sunroof opening cut into the roof! The dipping was not kind to the sheetmetal in the long run, and the cars used to sprout cancer and split seams...

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 05:41 AM

nothing cynical about those posts. the angle of the first shot i mention, doesn't show the wheelbase at all. the grain and texture of the second shot, looks like a diorama on my computer. i didn't "knock" the pics, i questioned the content of them.

i don't have any afx shots i took myself, and i'm not going to post someone else's work. i'm enjoying the vintage show. how about you?
Posted By: fullmetaljacket

Re: No Altered Wheelbase threads? Can we start one? - 01/06/14 05:42 AM

Some where I heard or read that Landy out of all of them decided to take delivery of his car with out the dip and that he progressed with his own lightweight program to make it the lightest with out dipping. He was apparently not trusting of the dipping because of his knowledge that they(the cars) would split down the middle. I could be wrong.

I stand corrected, Landy took his time to neutralize his car after dipping like stated below. The acid would keep working on through time, especially in corners and fold creases and such. A kind of an introduced cancer I guess.

Joe Ralph Thompson out of Arkansas. This car was an original 1964 MW Lightweight converted in 1966. I was told the aluminum cars were made illegal in NHRA around then. Joe died last year and I'm still in touch with his daughter. The car was in Garlit's museum for 15 years, and now resides at Bushmaster's in Missouri.

Avec paint. Derwood Reep was the driver. Joe had three cars at the time, two red Plymouths and a white Dodge.

Sanford Bolin's old AWB Plymouth. I got this photo off Classracer. A friend of mine owned this car at one time and said it was scary thin. It had the MSO when he owned it.

Sanford ran a transmission shop in Little Rock. He later ran a Street Roadster with a Hemi in it.

It was said the Landy was one who actually took the time to dop his car in a neutralizing solution and the dipping was done at night because the large plume of toxic smoke the process made

Love the AWB cars - Shame so many Hemi and Max wedge cars got sliced into AWB cars but that was racing progression

Search online you can find photos of guys building there own cars using the factory blueprints (full size prints) - Great thread on class racer ( A990 super stockers)

I prefer the early year cars as the later years they were really gutted (shirl greer, flying dutchman and the roofless Melrose Missle as examples)

For all you guys that have the bug to build an AWB 65 Coronet or Belvedere, those parts can be purchased at Sled City Fiberglass. Hoods, hood scoops awb fenders, dash boards, bumpers, and doors. Our fenders were supplied for a 62 Plymouth awb, 63 Plymouth awb and a 64 plymouth awb cars and the buyers did the altering on those units. www.sledcityevents.com

I saw this pic of my Buddy Bills altered. One week this was a nice stock 318 manual 3 speed. I saw it a week later with the wheel wells cut, moved forward held back together with sheet metal screws with 1"x2" wood backing it up. I asked if he was nuts. He said he wanted another one like he had when he was a kid. I think he was around 21 when he had this one.

My friend did the resto on the Strickler car. It definitely stayed in the tank to long, it was RUSTY. My brother in law lettered it. I did the alignment on it and got to drive it around the dealer lot, felt very light in the front. Only made it to 3rd gear. Still How many people can say they drove an original AWB?

This thread is exactly what I had suggested months back so that enthusiast and traders of such cars could chat, trade, buy and sell parts/ideas about these altered sedans. Great thread.
I would call it "The short legged " version.

If you are talking about the All Hemi Reunion in 2008 that is not true. Nick Smith owned the car then and still owns it along with the Landy car....

Full size blueprints are out there, they came with the pallet of parts the factory sent out to racers. They usually don’t get sold or loaned out because they get copied. Greg Lane had a similar problem when he sold full size Hemi blueprints. This is why a lot of info stays in private hands. Not saying the prints aren’t out there…one guy in this thread has one.

There is a small, semi-useful, 21 page manual numbered 4208.7 that is now in the public domain… These used to be hard to come by years ago even though they don’t show very much detail… http://www.moparmax.com/features/2006/images/05-report/report.pdf

Hence the taboo part. 64 post is correct, 4208.7 is semi useful. Although the pics are very grainy, the narrative explains a lot of it.
I didn't try to follow the narrative and pictures with my car because I wasn't trying to copy something that was authentic. There are actually a few easier ways to accomplish the rear relocation other than whats is depicted in 4208.7. Be prepared to do a lot of measuring and remeasuring and then remeasuring prior to doing any cutting.
It also depicts the relocation of the front torsion bar cross-member and frame sections. No information for using the A-100 strait-axle front suspension. This was not factory supplied with the first cars. This came sometime later once the cars were considered to be illegal. (that's the story I got don't any one crucify me if its incorrect)

I wasn't fortunate enough to have grown up in the time frame when theses cars ruled the track. Hopefully some where down the line more info will become available but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Enclosed is a pic of where the right rear frame of mine is cut. The shinier metal is new 18ga frame rails fabricated to match the existing rails. original rear bumper mounts are retained while allowing all suspension mounting points to remain intact as designed.

I'm in the process of building a 65 Coronet altered wheelbase clone. Document 4208.7 refers to the front frame layout 716-6734. Does anyone have that plan which shows all the bolt and fixture holes. I really need to know the total length of the new rails.
