tire pressure - 12/12/13 05:21 AM

Was running 14 lbs with tubes in my 29X13.5/15 Hoosiers QT's. Gonna start the season with the same tires, but tubeless. Thinking of starting around 20 lbs?

You could start at 20 lbs and then, if it spins, let it down a 1/2 lb at a time until it stops spinning BTW, are those tires radials or bias ply tires? Me no speak Hoosiers

Weight on the back of the car makes a BIG difference
what you need for pressure

You know your car better than anyone but ..

20 lbs sounds like an awful lot to me ??

What does MFG recommend ?

They hit it pretty close most often

No recommendations on their sight for tire pressure. They are bias ply tires. They wrinkled quite a bit with 14 lbs in them. At 11 lbs they looked like they were starting to wad. I considered going up in pressure due to less side wall support with no tubes? Car is heavy ( 3600 lbs )and I am sure more than 50% on the nose.

John I would call Hoosier & see what they reccomend.
I use M/Ts and they said what Cab said.
Hoosier may be able to give a good starting point.

I would start raising it until the 60' starts to drop
then back off a bit... you should see a better ET
and MPH

Re: tire pressure - 12/12/13 06:16 PM

14-24 seems to be the range. I went from 14 to 18 and pickup a bit. I was told to try 24 with caltracs and dump air til it does'nt spin. mph is better with more air. I run my qtp without tubes.

Are those qtp`s? If so, I raced for years in the 10 1/2-12 lbs. range and for me 12 was best but never tried more............

Re: tire pressure - 12/12/13 09:03 PM

yes quick time pro 28x11.50. hoosier suggested starting at 14, so I ran it there first couple times out. last time out put 16 in and then 18 and mph went from 128 to 129 and 130. 131 with hoosier drag radial at 18.

Ok, thanks all. Think I will start at 18 and go from there. Made multiple changes since last time out, so it's "guess-o-matic" On many fronts. Just trying not to do something stupid - AGAIN

Why are you ditching the tubes? In my experience heavier cars like them.

They may need more but I doubt 20. I personally have never seen anyone run 20 PSI in a bias slick that large, maybe 15-16

I might go back to them, but I was having "rim creep" at 14 lbs and was concerned about swallowing a valve stem. Don't wanna use screws. Could have glued them, which is what I have done when I mounted them back up without the tubes. Next outing is first week in January, so I guess I will see then.

Re: tire pressure - 12/13/13 07:12 AM

If those tires are not directional how about rotating them every other race to stop and reverse the tire movement I've done that in the past on tubeless tires, mark the bead at the valve stem and watch the movement, when it has moved 1 to 2 inche switch sides and wait until it goes 1 inch past the original marks the other way and then swap them again another option is to use screws on the inside only

I`d run screws myself and screws on the inside only have proven to not be the answer. There`s some videos and posts on the bullet talking about this and even mentions having the inside and outside screws be in the exact location. It was also mentioned that the amount of screws determins how the tire "wads up" and the length of those wads................

Ya Dom, was running screws on both sides and same location per your thread. Just don't want to screw my new Convo Pros if I don't have to. BTW, got a screw locating disc for 15" wheels if anyone ever needs to borrow it.

Re: tire pressure - 12/13/13 08:19 PM

I don`t see it as screwing up your wheels if the goal is to go fast........SAFELY............

Glue them, you will be fine when you up the pressure

Ya, they are glued right now. Just haven't been out yet to try them yet. Tire lady's problem anyway. She is up to speed on the situation.

For what its worth my 10.5x31W M/T are tubeless on a 10" rim @13.5 psi unscrewed and unglued. 1.32-1.35@3340lbs

Re: tire pressure - 12/14/13 06:42 PM

There`s no doubt some get away w/screws but in addition to guaranteeing the tire wont slip there`s an advantage(supposedly)to the screw spacing and controlling the "wadding up" of the tire.............

Re: tire pressure - 12/14/13 06:49 PM

had mine beadlocked. sent my warriors to champion wheel and they beadlocked one side for about $200/wheel plus they look cool. tire doesn't move.

You could be correct. The slicks on this car look better than slower cars I've had. They were unused at the beginning of the season but at least 5 years old.
