440 source heads on factory 440 Magnum block - 11/26/13 04:47 PM

I'm not sure if anyone has covered this question. I have an original 69 440 magnum factory pistons, etc. (Grandmas 69 Charger R/T) If I pulled the 906 heads off and put 440 source heads, on would there be any valve to piston problems, large compression ratio changes, or other issues. I was considering this for the weight savings, factory look, and a bit more hp. I have a mopar m1 factory style alum. manifold also. Has anyone done this?

Well, the valves are in the same location or nearly so on both heads.

The compression ratio may increase by half a point but the engine should actually be able to use one grade lower gasoline.

Buy'em and have someone go through them and correct valve guide clearance, possibly do a better valvejob and you're set.

440Source springs should work just fine with a reasonable cam.

Depends on the cam, check it with clay its not too hard. You should be OK though if its a mild cam. You will get a compression increase for sure, my Stealths CCed between 78 and 81 CC.

Put them on my 383, straight out of the box along with a 383 rpm intake from a stock one. Took 1/2 second off my 1/4 and don't use oil anymore. If you buy them through 440, I would just have them add the better retainer/ locks.
These should be just the thing you are looking for along with a better than stock intake.

If it's a stock shortblock and there's no V/P clearance now, there shouldn't be any with the new heads and same cam.

It never hurts to check, but don't let that worry stop you. You'll have about as much clearance as you have now. Think about it, the Source head is basically a copy of a 915, and the 906 is the same except for the open chamber. Valves are in the same location in space. You can usually run the stock rockers on the Source heads, too.

The M1 wont like a pretty much stock motor. Its more of a race manifold.Better to sell it unless you are building a more radical motor.Buy a Holley intake.Rocky

Thanks guys that helps a lot on my decision. the intake I have is not an M1 its a P 4529118 mopar performance out of production. basically a rough copy of a 440 magnum original intake only aluminum.

He said it was an M1 Street manifold, which I take to be dual plane. Not all M1s were single plane.

I have not done this.

My opinion is that it should work well. If the heads have 80 cc chambers, and the motor does indeed have its original 2.034" CH pistons, you will be at an honest 9.8:1 compression ratio (0.040" gasket). I believe that the actual compression distance from the factory in an uncut block with these pistons is about 0.050" in the hole. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

On my 440 with factory 915's with this exact piston and a stockish cam (MP 272 w/.455" lift) had about 0.25" p/v clearance on the intake and I could not even find the exhaust valve.

if you are meaning a holley street dom there is no difference at this level. Iv tryed it.. went back and tryed it again then went forward and tryed it again..... no difference other than the street dom has way better hood clearence.. street don wins... at this level

Which Source heads do you have?If the early ones check the chamber close. Some gaskets overhang into them.I run the Marine gaskets on mine.Been on 4 years or so and street driven. No problems.Rocky
