New smogger 318 turbo #'s - 11/03/13 09:17 PM

I finally had a day off and was able to crank up the dyno. The old turbo I tryed before was way to small for the motor and was into boost just off idle. I bought a GT 45 A/R 1.05/ 77mm exhaust and had to refabricated everything. This time I fabbed it up to fit a 81' Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4. (It would win 9 out of 10 ugly truck contests, it looks that bad)
I still have a couple of things to iron out but at 11lbs. of boost the bone stock 7.72-1 318 made 340.4hp and 371.2ftlbs.@ 4815rpm. The stock valve springs would only let the motor rev to about 4850. The hp and torque were climbing fast right to the point where I had to end the pull. With some better springs I wouldn't be suprised to see 400hp.
It was limited to 11 lbs of boost because my homemade gasket on the pressure side wouldn't hold anymore than that. The A/F ratio was pretty fat at 12.2/1 and the timing was limited to 20 degrees, I fed it 110 octane fuel to stay on the safe side.
I don't know how much more I'll try other than to see what fuel it will safely run on on the street. I started this project with the intent to learn something and give a 318 a bit of a kick in the pants for passing gear or the occasional ricer jerk laughing at my truck.
The bone stock motor with the factory 2bbl carb made 161.3hp and 285.4ftlbs. on my dyno. So if my math is correct, it increased the hp by 179.1 and 85.8ftlbs. I used a 73' 340 800cfm thermoquad drawn through the turbo into the stock 2bbl intake manifold, and the stock factory cast iron exhaust manifolds. Dave

Nice job quick d!

Can't complain about more then doubling the HP with only 11psi...

I would also like to thank Scott (dizuster) for recomending what turbo to use and letting me pick his brain.
If I leave well enough alone now the motor should last a long time. (That's harder than all the fab work) Dave

See if you can scare up a single plane intake for it. Those 2 little holes on the stock 2 bbl intake I'm guessing might be a lot of restriction. If it is I would expect you might see that 400 HP maybe a little more.

He has access to a single plane M1 that's sitting in the garage...

I think just a set of stock 340hp valve springs will do the trick. At 4800rpm the hp and torque were going straight up. My son droppped a valve in a warmed over smogger 360 about 10 years ago, I may pirate the springs off those heads.
It's a disease.....I can't leave anything alone. Dave

Those numbers are right in line with what wallace racing calculated for my car. Mine has ran a best of 90mph dead lean in the 1/8th, tuned right it hovers around 87 and wallace racing gave a figure of 350 at the crank. My 318 is a stone stock 76 smogger with a holley 650 and a GT45 turbo. I did recently change to a Victor 340 intake but I haven't been back to the track yet. I do run alittle more boost, normally 15 to 18 with creep so that calculator is about right.

Gotta love them turbos!

Way cool!

Boost is king.

Yeah, get some better valve springs for it and it will like it for sure.

Can't go wrong with Comp 901s.

impressive numbers for sure

i it where me i would stay with the valvesprings at hand for a while before that poor litle 318 ends up falling apart.

Mine has a radial crack in number 8 piston after torching my second headgasket...and it still holds 18lbs I don't think the heads will ever flow enough to kill the bottom end as long as the tune is safe

The motor handled 28lbs. of boost with the small turbo on it after I O-ringed the block and in stalled copper head gaskets. It put out 626ftlbs@2400rpm. Dave

And everyone complains it's too expensive to build a Mopar...Just add boost

This just makes me giggle like a little school girl =) The 5psi on my 383 is fun, can't imagine that kind of boost. I kept the SVO turbos I used first thinking I may just do something similar/cheap to a sb at some point....

The initial cost of the motor was $150, a Napa rebuild that never sold. At some point sitting around the machine shop the plastic got torn off and the motor got filled with dirt, chips, and filings. I came along and bought it, tore it down and cleaned it up.
Turbo was $250 to my door, wastegate was around $30. Another $100 for odds and ends. I had the exhaust tubing laying around left over from other projects. I did buy an Isky Groovamatic for o-ringing the block but I don't really count the cost of tools I buy because they're used over and over on other projects. Bought a couple sets of copper head gaskets from a member of Moparts, basicly 1/2 price from new. Also bought and destroyed a set of Felpro head gaskets on their first pull with the small turbo, (they didn't like 28lbs of boost).
So if you add everything up including the first turbo, it's still under a grand and I more than doubled the hp. Dave
