New smogger 318 turbo #'s - 11/03/13 09:17 PM
I finally had a day off and was able to crank up the dyno. The old turbo I tryed before was way to small for the motor and was into boost just off idle. I bought a GT 45 A/R 1.05/ 77mm exhaust and had to refabricated everything. This time I fabbed it up to fit a 81' Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4. (It would win 9 out of 10 ugly truck contests, it looks that bad)
I still have a couple of things to iron out but at 11lbs. of boost the bone stock 7.72-1 318 made 340.4hp and 371.2ftlbs.@ 4815rpm. The stock valve springs would only let the motor rev to about 4850. The hp and torque were climbing fast right to the point where I had to end the pull. With some better springs I wouldn't be suprised to see 400hp.
It was limited to 11 lbs of boost because my homemade gasket on the pressure side wouldn't hold anymore than that. The A/F ratio was pretty fat at 12.2/1 and the timing was limited to 20 degrees, I fed it 110 octane fuel to stay on the safe side.
I don't know how much more I'll try other than to see what fuel it will safely run on on the street. I started this project with the intent to learn something and give a 318 a bit of a kick in the pants for passing gear or the occasional ricer jerk laughing at my truck.
The bone stock motor with the factory 2bbl carb made 161.3hp and 285.4ftlbs. on my dyno. So if my math is correct, it increased the hp by 179.1 and 85.8ftlbs. I used a 73' 340 800cfm thermoquad drawn through the turbo into the stock 2bbl intake manifold, and the stock factory cast iron exhaust manifolds. Dave
