The tires shown are 28 x 10 slicks

Going to mini-tub it and hopefully there is enough room

Front will be an Alterkation

1st motor will be a lump just to get it shook down

I'm going to put a Dana under it since we have a truck rear to use

Ladder bars ..

Not sure if I'll use a 518 trans or 727 and a gear vendor

Neat but, not going to need that for this car for some time..

After the chassis stuff, I'm going to have the insides done

Plan is to leave most of the body as is

fix the lower 1/4's is all

Maybe it will be ready next summer for some highway driving to see if everything works

Made room for the 28-10's

I was lucky enough to drive that car for 3 years. It's deadly consistent - much more so than this driver deserves. It belongs to Kenny Dick. Kenny also drives a 65 Cuda and is a pretty darn good driver. Carlos did drive it at Mason Dixon..., and so did I. When I was driving it at Mason Dixon (I lost in the finals), they kept introducing me as Carlos on the PA so maybe that's where some of the confusion came from. Carlos is also a friend of mine a hell of a driver. Here are some more pics of the wagon.

Cool. I saw it at the Turkey Race in 2011 at M-D. I think it was in the 11.20s that day. I haven't met Carlos in person yet, but know Dave Raser, Don Anderson (Ferndale Flyer). I'll have to remember to look at my pics from then, see if they came out decent.

Re: 1965 Valiant wagon build ..Is underway - 10/26/13 10:50 PM

Still waiting on new front stuff ..

Rear mock up ..

15x10.5x28 tires

rear rims 15x10 with 3.5 backspace

Looks like we will have about .75 on each side of tire ..

If we can't squeeze them in, we can drop a tire size..

Pretty tight, think it will fit

I'm likin' it!
If you might ever want to run a 30" tire, or taller, do you have room? Now would be the time to stretch the opening if a taller tire might be in the future...
Posted By: bigdad

Re: 1965 Valiant wagon build ..Is underway - 10/26/13 11:20 PM

No room, not with the mini-tub we did ..

The wheel house is kinda square .

You run out of room on the top front corner

Again, you could move the rear of the car up and then yes I think you could

I'm trying to keep it low , don't want to see top of the tire ..ugg

You can get a lot of your lenses from places like

http://www.pentastarparts.com.au/store/

http://www.elkoperformance.com.au/store/comersus_index.asp

I may be telling you something you know already, but if you are buying new cargo window rubbers/seals (can't remember if they make them or not), specify you have an AP5 wagon. The pillar at the front of the cargo window slopes further forward. Late '65 the body changed over here. Your wagon would have been a Canadian AP6 over here with slight differences in trims, molds etc.
They are a gorgeous car, sadly, the last one I had was a rust bucket so I parted it out.

Re: 1965 Valiant wagon build ..Is underway - 06/01/14 05:48 PM

My 66 Wagon is down at Stephen Duarity's shop now, gonna get it fitted for an 8 3/4 and a brake and suspension upgrade while the 440-W2/904 come together.

I really like these Wagons, they're really nice inside with all the interior detail trim and all the glass, and being a 4 door/wagon they make for a 'quirky cool' fun daily driver you can actually cruise with friends and family with and get some 'honest to goodness' practical use out of.

I've never had a pre 67 A body before, one thing I notice right off they're smaller overall and lighter than the 67-later A bodies. You know it's funny when you see even an occasional Duster or Dart Sport running around in traffic they almost look HUGE compared to most modern cars, especially from the back. Never thought I'd say that because us Mopar guys think of 67-later A's as our Small cars.

Since I bought it I thought about selling it a few times (since the stable is pretty full) but
I think I'd regret it....I really LOVE that AlterKation set-up and mini-tubs that BigDad has, I just wish there was $$$ in the budget for something like that.

Something I'm wondering is why the 63-66 A wagons have a rounder rear wheel-well, if you look at the same year sedans they do not, even though they appear to use the exact same doors. It looks like a 67-later B body rear would work well in the wagons, even with standard OEM 15" dog dish cop wheels, It doesn't appear they would stick out, it might even enhance the sleeper OEM look....but I haven't dug down into the physical dimensions of the swap just yet. The factory width rear looks a little too narrow to me.

I told Stephen and Mike that Mike's 69 Super B was my inspiration for this build, I want another Classic Mopar sleeper that I can drive anywhere and just have fun with.

A 518 bolts right up and gives you a 727 with OD..
change out the pump to a standard 727 pump and you
can run a high stall conv but you do lose lock up
and its cheap to do... you might need to work the
trans tunnel.. big deal where your at now

I've been considering the 518

any drawbacks ?

None that I see... unless you want a stock conv
with lock up... that will kill your launch .. I'm
happy with mine for a street/strip rod

I'd give up launch to have the benefit of torque converter lock up......

Not me.. if you run a 4.10 gear with a 295/55 tire
I run 75 mph at 2900 rpm... thats with a 5000 stall..
if you want to run faster than 80 mph then thats your choice

Plenty of companies that make GOOD hi-stall lockup converters out there. I would try an ATS or DTT company for one IMO. The clutches are designed for Diesel torque.

Did a few hours of research on the 518 and talked to some local HP trans type shops plus a few people that are experts from here

and, well ..

I am going to use a 727 with a gear vendor

Mock up with be with a shorty style 727 and when we get to the OD stage , the mount will have adjustment (not supposed to need any)

and make a torque tube then

More pics will be posted this week, made more progress
