What was wrong with the 850 ultra?
I really like the Holley 950HP, but I used it on a 451".

I run a Holley Ultra 950 Hp on my 416. Nice carb, made minimal changes to it.

I would use the Holley 950 HP, # 80496- what ever the latest dash number is They flat work well on almost every motor I've heard of anyone using one of them on They're not a actual 950 CFM carb, they're little smaller cfm, but they still work very well

The Ultra 850 and 950 as well from what I see on the net are dead lean ootb.I have changed every tuning part on this carb and it still has a stumble at wot.Not just a little stumble, car goes silent for 5 seconds stumble. The hp carbs are good I guess but I cant buy another Holley product

If your not happy with Holley you can call pro systems or AED and they can custom make one for you for about the same price. I'm sure you know that already though. I've also had no problems with the Holley HP 950.

Re: Need to buy a new carb - 09/28/13 03:02 PM

If Jegs or Summit have any reman 1025rs race demon(4150) that is what I would get.
ran one even on my flat tappet 416 eddy motor and that 1025 was one sweet piece. Nicest carb I have ever had
Faster than any even custom HP 4150 carb I tried, and ran as well as a custom dominator. I tried a number of carbs

I have a PF950HP it is a very good carb. I sent it to Quick Fuel a few years ago to have them work their magic on it. It came back a immediately went 03 and 3mph slower. I tried thru tuning to get it back. I was able to get half of it back. In the end I called QF and ask if they could/would put it back like it was. I sent it back. When it returned. The car ran just like it did before I ever sent the carb to QF.

Sometimes carbs are very good just as they were built. JMO

I put a new carb and intake on this year and could not get the pump shot to come in off idle, and it was causing a stumble. I checked everything, then I took a look at the arm that pushes down the acc pump lever. The arm appeared to be bent a little sloppy, not nice 90*bends. I took it off, tweaked it a little and replaced it. The carb works great now. My point is maybe it is not always something internal, check the most basic parts first. Carb was a Holley 4150 1k annular.

Are you using an AF meter? How's the ignition and what are the timing settings? Does it have an adveance curve or locked out.

5 seconds... really.

None of the 850 or 950 ultras I've dealt with had much in the way of tuning issues.

The 80496 950hp's are horrible on cruise and require major tweaking to get a decent A/F.

IMO, you aren't going to find anything out of the box that will perform spot on. Everything will require some tweaking. It's not a box stock 375hp 440 where the dealer has a carb on the shelf that runs on thousands of them out there.

This saves me a bunch of typing...........

Drag car only? Depends on max rpm but the 850 ultra should be a good carb for you. The 750 ultra would also work pretty well on that engine.

Re: Need to buy a new carb - 09/29/13 01:56 AM

On my 408 the best carb has been my 750hp. I tried a 950hp & a 830hp and neither one would out perform the 750. The 750hp was a factory carb I bought and set up and the other 2 were custom builds. Some people have good luck with custom built carbs but I haven't.

Another one to stay away from if you have a street car is a 80676 950 ultra HP they take a LOT of work to get the cruise AFRs right.
There is a very long thread on Yellow bullet about them.

I dont expect to get a carb that is perfect out of the box..............You should maybe change some jets, squirters, air bleeds? The 850 ultra I had had every tuning part changed and it still was crap.I gave a good effort to get it right.I did a search on here and found another guy who had exactly the same problems with a friends 850.Many the same on Yellow Bullet as well, not just me.

I'll second the suggestion that you contact AED (Richmond, VA, USA) about a carb suitable for your application.

I bought custom Quickfuel carbs for my tunnel ram a few years ago and everything was pretty much dead on out of the box, best carbs by far that I've ever owned.

After work yesterday(got up at 4am)I drove to Summit(6hrs)gave them my 850 ultra and picked up a 850 Quickfuel.Out of the box this thing works better than the Holley.AFR is at about 11.3 so I jetted down by 4 sizes front and rear and we will see how that works.Even fat it has better throttle response than the holley.I got home at 2 am....was a long day.

Re: Need to buy a new carb - 09/29/13 11:04 PM

Good deal! I think you'll be real happy with it. That is definitely a long day, I live just a few blocks from Summit, it is so convenient. I was probably working on the Duster when you were at Summit.

What setup are you using to monitor air/fuel ratio? Do you have an oxygen sensor in each header collector? I've always just tuned at the track for best MPH and ET and just left it there, but this is the first true street car I've ever built so I want it to run safe at highway speeds and stuff like that.

Re: Need to buy a new carb - 09/30/13 12:17 AM

I put a Q series 850 on a healthy 440 w/ alum heads and it ran great out of the box. other than some minor tuning, no problems for 3 years now! good choice.
