How not to do a wheelie at Norwalk - 09/26/13 02:10 AM

This was not what I had in mind at Norwalk.
The great pictures are from David Potter " 1966 Hemi Satellite". He is a big Plymouth fan. Considering this mishap, I was fortunate that David got these pics. Thanks David!

Sorry just seen that it was your car... bummer on taking out
a fender(I hope no more than that)... I know you will
get it corrected.... and put some sissy sticks on it

Wow Tom, that was really nasty! It could have been a lot worse. I am so glad it appeared to be only sheet metal damage. Have you had a chance to asses the damage? Jim T.

Thats not good, thats enough force to twist and bend the unibody.

Re: How not to do a wheelie at Norwalk - 09/26/13 02:43 AM

Hi Jim. So far it looks like the front frame rails by the shock towers are bent. Both the front and rear passenger fenders need to be replaced as well as both bumpers, the front valance under the grill and the rear tail light bezel.

I sure hate to see that. I heard about a RR hitting the wall at Norwalk, and you told me you were going there the night we met at Ohio Valley. It sure was running well that night. So sorry to see this. I hope it isn't too bad?

Tom, can the frame rails be straighten on a frame machine or do you think it may require surgery?

Thanks. The car was running as good as it ever has. I even put more clicks in the front shocks so this would not happen. The car is fixable. It is just going to take time and money.

Yeti... thats a bummer.. so the a$$end came around and
slammed in also... bummer... a good frame shop can
pull it back into shape(I use to to frame work years
ago at a bump shop)... its not that hard to do if the
guys want to spend the time... best of luck buddy

I took the car to a really good frame shop today and they said they would need one full day and can put the frame back. They have been around along time and have the old books with specs.

Well I see you survived the "homecoming" and all is well.

Sorry to see that damage but glad to hear you are already working on the repairs. Get that thing tamed down and it will continue to get faster then it already is. Hope to see you around next year.

Thats cool... I had about 60 spec points on each side
I had to check when I did them... I tried to get them
dead on.. my boss was always getting pissed at me for
taking to long... I always said... what do you want..
quality or quantity ... that shop was known for quality
work

Oh man that sucks. Sorry to see a nice car like that get into the wall. We bent the front frame rails on the Barracuda several years ago from a bad wheel stand like that. Frame shop was able to get everything back square though. I bet they get yours back good as new. Good luck with the repairs.

Re: How not to do a wheelie at Norwalk - 09/26/13 03:23 AM

Wow, that was quite the ride Tom !

Good job keeping it on all 4 wheels after the landing

I'm sure the 'Runner will rise again with some improvements to the chassis/cage and a set of wheelie bars.

The same thing happened to my car back in 2008 at Quaker City. Took the car to a good frame and body shop, the owner is a Mopar guy. It took $6k in frame and body work though but all is well now. Body work and paint can sure get expensive these days.

I was amazed that you kept the shiny side up. Great job driving with so much happening in a fraction of a second.

Yeah guys call them "sissy sticks" but I call them "cheap insurance".

Sorry to see that happen, it's a good looking car.

Ugh...hope it can be fixed.

That RR might be my first car! I saved a blue '68 Runner in Louisville in '79, did a bunch of work to it and sold it locally in '84. I'd hear about sightings from time to time...

We were all pretty worried when we heard about the accident. Thankfully the only thing damaged was material. Very nice car you have there and I hope it doesn't compromise too much for you getting it back to its glory. My best, Sean

Tom - That's me in the blue coat just above the hood. My father-in-law and I talked to you, I think on Saturday afternoon about it. Glad that you are OK and that you can get the RR fixed. Watching that, I thought you were going over. Nice bit of driving to keep it on the wheels.

Tom..I'm just glad you weren't hurt! Cars can be repaired..in due time, but serious injuries can linger for as long as you live! Like many have said..you have a FAST,and BEAUTIFUL Roadrunner! It will be even better after you get er' repaired! Best of Luck with it,my friend! BTW...Thank You for calling me a few Fridays ago...that was real thoughtful of You! You're a "Class Act" in my book!

Wow! Glad you weren't hurt. Does your car have ladder bars or cal tracs. I can see a front mount or cal trac rocker in the pic, but not sure which. Did you pull second gear early to take power away? Hope the repairs go well. Beep

I have a ladder bar coil over set up. 2nd gear did nothing to slow the rate of rise.after the repairs I will get wheelie bars and front end limiter.
