How big of a transmission cooler do I need? - 08/17/13 03:48 AM
How big of a trans cooler do I need? Car is a 3200 lbs with driver, 90% race 10% street, 727, 8" converter, ~530 hp small block. I'm using the trans cooler that is in radiator currently...do I need more?
I just cooked the clutches in my trans, but it was 7 years old, so it was about due for a rebuild.

I'm using a B&M finned one it's about 7x12 and has threaded holes for fitting good hoses on it, make sure you use good hose, and don't run it thru the radiator, unless your driving the car in winter.

I use a honey comb B&M from Kragens and has worked great for several years w/my big block, 727 and an 8" 5000+ stall vert..........never sees over 180 degrees...............

I ran a 22000 pound rated cooler on my 526 low block. Never any issues. I plan on the same thing for my 528 Hemi. Plate types are allegedly more efficient and compact than tube/fin coolers. Check the manufacture's dimensional specs or one that fits your needs. By the way the low block was a tube/fin deal. If you plan on using your radiator cooler, plumb the ancillary unit in after the radiator.

That B&M super cooler is an excellent tranny cooler. Beyond that step up to a derale with a fan mounted to it.

B&M Supercooler here, mounted my own fan to it, can hotlap with a brake on a 5500 stall converter no problem.just DO NOT BUY A 'S' PASS cooler, too restrictive.

2001 Dakota 5.2 Trailer Tow pack cooler.......fits exactly into a 22' rad opening.
That sucker is COLD after the fan is running for 30 seconds.....Cheap and it works.
Just get the line ends to the cooler when you pull it...makes hooking it up a breeze.
