Transmission drain plug hole stripped

Transmission drain plug hole stripped - 04/21/13 04:22 PM

Went to change the fluid today and to tighten the drain plug it had no grip. Threads are stripped. It is a TCI aluminum pan. Due to trans shield nylon strap, it may be difficult to get the pan pulled off without lowering tranny. Anyone have any good ideas on a fix? Can the hole be tapped larger with the pan on the car? What about aluminum shavings in the pan? Any help would be appreciated.

They make engine oil pan self tapper plugs with a smaller removable plug in the center. They come in various diameters. Any local auto parts will have them.

Yep... I've used them on oil pans in the past.. they
work fine... or just tap it to a larger fine thread
with a bolt and O-ring

shavings ? ... the filter will prevent the flow of that into the VB and the trans ... NOT to worry.

As to the shavings.. waste a qt or 2 of trans fluid
to flush the shavings out the hole after tapping..
what doenst come out will NOT bother anything and
the filter will take care of it

Thanks for the comments. That will save alot of time. Thanks Mr. P for the suggestion on flushing it with another quart of fluid. Looks like we will keep getting ready for opening day.
