Let's talk ProCharging - 02/26/13 03:30 AM

I am considering installing a ProCharger on my stock cast crank, stock rod 1978 360. It has .030 over KB flat tops installed .005 in the hole, a Comp .526/275 hyd cam with 1.6 rockers. It also has IMM built 68cc RHS X heads, an Edelbrock Air Gap intake and MSD ignition. Don't know the head gasket thickness, got them from IMM and didn't measure the thinkness, compression should be approx. 10.3? I think. So, here's my questions and request for feedback...I know I will need a blow through carb and an upgrade to my fuel system...what am I missing? Is my compression ration too high? What say ye? Approx. Cost? Thanks in advance. BTW the way, the engine is already running and it runs good but it's just not fast enough... It's installed in this:

This is just my opinion... with the compression you
you limit the boost you can run.... a inner cooler will
help some... the cast crank isnt the best BUT can work
with limited boost... the pistons wont like boost...
these are just my opinions with the limited boost engines
I have built.... I will tell you something that is
FACT... you will NEVER be happy with a few pounds of boost...
you might get away with 10# for a period of time BUT
then you will say.... how about 14#...... JMO

Suggest you start out by asking yourself how much HP you wanna make and then go from there. If you wanna use your existing block ( in stock configuration ), crank and rods, you will probably want to stay around 500HP max. Your CR should be in the 8.0 to 8.8 range, so the pistons you have won't work - nor will the cam ( you will need a cam with a minimum of 113 LSA. Blower, kit, fuel upgrades, carb, and engine changes I mentioned will put you in the 6 to $6500 range ( conservatively speaking ). The problem (IMO), it's too much $ for 500 HP. If you are gonna spend the $ to blow it, you will wanna make 700 HP or more. You can make 500HP cheaper by just making some changes to your existing NA motor. Just went through this whole scenerio recently. I started with 700HP as my goal and worked backwords - using a stock 79 360 block as my base. If you decide to go for 700HP, you can add and additional 3 -4K to the $6500 to try and make the block live at 700HP.

Re: Let's talk ProCharging - 02/26/13 04:19 AM

Years ago a friend bought a Pro Charger kit from the Supercharger Store. It included everything he needed to install the system (Carb, fuel pump, fuel lines, meth injection, Blower, pulleys etc).
He had a 360 that was factory except for the hydraulic camshaft, Weiland Xcellerator intake, headers and HEI ignition. The short lasted around 3 months.
He wasn't keeping an eye on the boost at all.
Only problem we had with installing the kit was the factory water pump pulley wouldn't clear the crank pulley. I had to make him a new billet pulley. I think also the blower crapped itself in the first week, which the Supercharger Store replaced no questions asked.

Thanks, BTW the engine should be making somewhere between 400-450 now and I would like to be around 600.

With about 5# you could make 600hp easy... sort of a
waste of a blower

I have some thick Flatout copper head gaskets you can use to lower your compression with your existing motor. You will just need taller alignment pins. Never used them, and was going to about the same thing. Perfect for this sort of thing.

Don't think I would try to make that kind of HP with a stock rotating assembly ( rods and pistons for sure ). Boost is regulated by blower size, rpm, and blower pulley size ( usually 3 different blower pulley sizes available to tailer to your needs). The kits are very nice and complete. They do not include a surge/dump valve ( $225 ) which you will want to buy. Ryan Witte at "Steve Morris Engines" is a good place to start for your specific needs/ questions. Also suggest you buy a fuel system package rather than try and piece meal it - to keep you out of trouble. Same with the carb. You can make your own mods, but you better know what you are doing. I also went with water injection (and race gas) verses an inner cooler. Drag race only application. For street, and inner cooler might be applicable - mo $.

What is that little box do? A little more detail on the build would be nice too..

Looks like a Snow Performance water/meth controller. Above it looks like an anti syphone solenoid which is crutial part and good insurance when using w/m. I've know more than one person who has hydro locked there engine cause they didn't have the solenoid installed.

Re: Let's talk ProCharging - 02/26/13 10:20 PM

Do you have E85 in your area? If so 10.3:1 isn't horrible if you keep the boost/timing in check.

My iron headed 360 is about 9.2:1. It's been to 15psi on the street a few times (on accident when I was screwing around with the boost controller). If you keep the timing in check with E85 it can take quite a bit of boost/compression.

For reference, mine has been 10.99@123mph on 8psi/22deg of timing with a 2.76 gear in a 3700lb car. Stock block, stock crank (didn't even turn it), stock rods (with good bolts), off the shelf forged pistons, home ported '308 castings, 224/218 hydraulic roller (.500"/.500", 114 lsa), with a swap meet POS single plane intake. Shift it at 5500, smoothest 10 sec. pass I've ever made.

Boost is your friend...

Re: Let's talk ProCharging - 02/27/13 03:51 AM

I was thinking about this just today. Whats not to like about picking up a salvage yard 360. Whack it with boost, make 500 plus hp and when she pops, back to the salvage yard for another bullet.
I think its great, your expensive power adder is relativly safe from the carnage. Or am I missing something there?

Correct on both counts . The "Snow" system, ( besides having 3 different size nozzles to chose from ) has a programable boost referenced controller so you can adjust at what boost the water starts to come on and at what boost it is at max flow for the particular nozzle you are using. I have mine set to come on at 6 psi and max out at 15psi. Top of the line kit from "Snow" also comes with the anti syphon solinoid and low water warning system ( light ). My block is a stock (E58) 360 block from a 1979 Chrysler 300. Sonic tested at .2 or better on all thrust and antu-thrust sides @ .030 over. I got lucky there. Block is 3/4 filled ( over freeze plugs ). Went with Milodon 4 bolt mains (studed). Forged 4" crank, Eagle "H" beams, Icon blower pistons. Trying to make a stock block live at 700HP. Ended up with 8.8:1 with 60 CC chambers ( MLS .039" gaskets ). Fully ported Magnum "Iron Rams" (studed). Comp custom blower cam. Edelbrock 340 Jr, ProSystems 950 blower carb. D.U.I. ignition running at 29 degrees total ( 110 race gas ). Nothing trick. It's my first blower motor and I'm still learning on the set up. Got good help from Steve Morris engines, the SuperCharger Store ( Bob Woods ) and some guys right here on Moparts .

Interesting thoughts, don't know if E-85 is available in my area or not...but its worth the thought.
Thanks for all of the input guys...lots to think about, really makes you rethink your position when you realize you didnt build as much engine as you REALLY wanted...lol

Ain't nothing wrong with the idea! My good buddy has a foxbody mustang with a 302- stock bottom parts, factory forged pistons, good rod bolts, small cam with ootb eddy heads and a Vortech YSI blower on 14-15psi....Had some issues with the tune last year, but the car should have no problem seeing low 11's high 10's, and if he pukes his motor, its off to the local classifieds for another
