Hey Guys

I'am gonna start to build a street motor for my son and need a little help on

deciding what route to take .

Is 500+ hp doable and live on the street?

Here are the specs so far

1973 440 block not decked yet.

2355 TRW pistons 2.061 comp heigt = .020 in the hole

edelbrock aluminum rpm's 82cc OOTB.

performer rpm intake gasket matched.

felpro .039 or .020 steel shims?

purple shaft .528 straight up or advanced?

steel crank and 6 pack rods.

if i deck the block .020 to get zero deck height that will give me a quench in the range of .039

& comp in 10:24 with pump gas.

My Questions

1. with the 2355 piston valve reliefs can i run the .528 cam or will ptv be a issue ?


2. Has anyone run a similar combo on the street ? what were the results ?

I highly doubt that there will be a P to V problem, but you HAVE to check.

I have not run a similar combo, but my opinion is that it will run great, but a little short of 500 hp.

That's a lot like the 1st build I did for this car. I had a touch more compression and a 6-pack. Ran great w/ a 3800 stall and 3.91's.

My 440 w/ pretty much the same build except for a hyd roller with similar lift, otb rpms, victor intake & 850 Holley, made 534 CHP, w/ 560 torque, in Carson City which is almost 5000 ft elevation.
Think you'll make 500 no problem. Good luck

Thanks Guys i will defiantly do a ptv when time comes.

right now just getting all the parts together i have laying around

What about the quench it will be about .059 if i dont deck the block & .039 if i take .020 off? but i will have more ptv.

what would you guys do deck or not to deck that is the new question?

Deck it first. With a 500 HP streeter you will want a good quench.

Ditch the 904 "six-pack" rods, they add mass to an already heavy reciprocating assembly. LYs are better in that they weigh less, use the same rod bolts, which are the most highly stresaed part on the rod.
Aftermarket rods are even better, although you should buy the rods before you deck the block for good squish because they are all a hair shorter than OEM rods. Most are 6.760", one set (Manley?) is 6.765, and stock is 6.768.

If it were mine I'd prefer the 4 bbl rod over the 6 pack but that's JMO.
If your shooting for .040" quench I'd suggest getting the rods center to center equalized (re-sized & new bolts of course).
Then measure how far the piston is in the hole.
Have the deck cut/squared for the steel shim head gasket and .040" quench.

I have no idea on what HP it'll make

I have found out the hard way to make sure to check the deck hieght by rocking the piston agianst the cam side of the block and measure the piston on the outside of the block and then rock the piston over against the outside of the block and measure the cam side of the piston top, I use both measurements and go from there I've seen .008 and more differences by measuring that way I use a real thin narrow screwdriver blade to rock the piston back and forth I agree on selling the six pak rods and using a set of LY Make sure and check all eight piston deck hieghts I would shoot for .040 minimum deck hieght now including checking all eight pistons, you may end up with some pistons that are .055 in the hole and some right at .040 but you will be safe using .040 quench Don't be suprised to see some differences on the deck hieghts with stock type rods 500 HP with parts like yours is easy to make, shoot for 10.25 or more compression ratio BTW, 440 motors like and need big carbs, 850 CFM + Don't be suprised to see 510+ HP at 6000 RPM and 550+ Ft. lbs torque at or close to 4000 RPM

Are you using headers or manifolds with this eng ? I agree with using the lighter LY rods and shooting for zero deck and .039 quench. Myself if I was using headers I would go for a little more cam like maybe step up to the MP .557. Nothing wrong with the .528 in the right combo but if you use exh manifolds and your combo I am not so sure you will be making 500 hp but should be close at the least. Myself I would use the headers and get the extra hp. Good luck , Ron

Zero deck it and get your quench with the gaskets. No needto worry about valve clearance with those pistons, the crowns are stupid thick, PLEANTY of room for deeper notches. 500 hp.....easy.

For a few bucks more (&17.79) $409.39 vs. $391.60 (Summit prices), get the light weight LW2355 piston. It's 99 grams lighter (773 vs 872) than the standard L2355 piston, and uses 1/16" rings.

Milling the block to zero deck the pistons, 0.040" head gasket, and 82cc heads is about 10.2:1 compression.

Too late the rotating assembly was balanced and on the shelf

for a while (6pack rods and heavy 2355's) and now just started dusting it off lol.

And just cc the heads tonight and they are 78cc not 82 as i thought

must have been cut some time before i got them...

There is definitely a loss of horsepower between headers and good manifolds. The difference in horsepower on the dyno on my 400 stroker was 9%. I think your combo should make somewhere in the 510 - 520hp range with headers. If you run the manifolds you will likely be just be shy of 500. Still a stout street combo.
