Tubs assembly tricks?

Tubs assembly tricks? - 01/27/13 04:44 PM

We are working on a pro street truck for my son and we picked up a set of steel wheel well tubs from S&W.

Is there any trick to get the S crimp to go together. The tubs are shipped un assembled.

I've done the alum tubs many times and I assume they
have the same crimp joint... I start the end and curve
the upper part of the tub so its close and tap the
crimp closed right at the end... its much easier to
have 2 people doing this job... once its started then
tap the metal into the receiver groove good and about
ever 6" to 10" tap the receiver closed then once its
all in go back and tap the whole flange closed using
a wooden block and hammer
Also I use a rope to hold the radius close(tied around
the tub on the radius... about 2" from the crimp joint)

These heavy gauge steel ones are tuff. I will try the rope thing. This is the problem I am having. Getting it started the key needs to be lined up 10"s away to let the rest fit in. If I could get the flat stock with the S bent to have the same rad as the tub it would just tap in.

I will try the rope or ratchet strap.

Is this a Pittsburgh seam? Usually you can see a notch at each end of the seams male and female, line those up and start running the seam together. I'm a sheet metal worker for the union, spent some time in the fab shop, a duct 90* elbow is basically the same as a wheel tub.

Not sure what a Pittsburgh seam is. It looks like a double bend or S shape. The rad of the tub is just a 90* roll. It needs to fit into one end of the S then the end of the S to be tapped over to hold it in.
