My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/14/13 11:43 PM

As most of you know, my last engine met an untimely demise. If you wish to review, that thread can be seen HERE

Many have asked over the past few months what the old motor was/is being replaced with, and assuming you read the title of this post before clicking, you now have your answer. I bought this engine complete, and have taken it down to the block and am replacing and upgrading where I feel is warranted and my budget will allow.

Here are the specifics:

Siamese, 59 degree R3, bushed lifter bores
BPE 4.25" crank
4.125 bore
Venolia Flat Top piston
12.75:1
6.125" Eagle H beam
Brodix B1-MC's by Koffel
Crane cam .619/.641 278/284@.050 108 LSA
Comp 8043 lifters
T&D 1.5 ratio paired rockers
Pushrod oiling
Ritter 420 intake, ported and opened up to Dominator flange
BG 1050 Dominator, will probably get converted for E85 use.
Hooker 2" headers 3.5" collector meant for W2/W5 application with adapter plates.
Crank trigger
CSR water pump

Intake Flow@28"
0.100 83
0.200 150
0.300 205
0.400 255
0.450 275
0.500 281
0.550 290
0.600 300
0.650 310
0.700 315

The block and rotating assembly are at the machine shop, they should be making their way back to me this week! Then the reassembly begins.

Unknown lifters we believe to be Cranes, compared to the 8043 Comps. Thank you Brian at IMM for pushing to have these made.

That's nice and although I'm not one to judge I never liked those Brodix heads. I haven't seen any car with those heads that really runs strong, I sincerly hope yours is the exception though. Good luck.

Damn Dustin, you went BIG! Nice!

What in the motor are you changing? Or is the stuff you listed going to be the final setup for it?

If I remember correctly you had an 8 point bar in the car right? Might need a 10 point cage now lol

Fireguy or something like that? His car should have run well into the 9's but only ran like 10 0's?

Everything I listed is how it is going back together. Parts were changed for various reasons.

This image is with the old lifters as I took it apart.

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 03:20 AM

You might want to buy a couple of the Summit brand phenolic one inch thick Dominator spacers and try them, one and then two
Posted By: Triple Threat

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 04:42 AM

The plenum is fairly sizeable as it sits, but I was planning on experimenting with spacers anyway. The car is still only legal to 10.0, and its heavy.

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 06:05 AM

That short block looks like a combo I'm familiar with. Otta be fun. Making any changes such as cam or heads?
Posted By: Triple Threat

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 06:22 AM

I might be dumb enough to drive it to the track just to do it. We'll see, I can tell you that its gonna be driven on the street still.

Cam is the one it came with, kind of old school but for now it works. The heads were treated to new valves, springs and just a good check up and cleaning. If budget wasn't a concern it would have an Indy or W9 on top of it, probably will in the future. For now these heads shall get the job done.

I don't have any good pictures of the short turn. Would need to pull the valves out for those.

...you can take the boy out of the Stage VI's......but you can't take the Stage VI's out of the boy!

So what was the deal with those Brodix heads? I know they were spendy, but I'm sure the castings are good. Was the potential there?

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 02:58 PM

Dustin,
What size valves and also what cc are the intake runners in the heads??
Posted By: Triple Threat

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/15/13 04:27 PM

J, correct. Very expensive, very good casting from a quality perspective. Never caught on due to cost, need for aftermarket equipment and poor port layout. I haven't seen any other small block MC engines out there. Ryan got pretty good numbers from a set, you can check flow numbers and more on his site.

Ryan, 2.15/1.60 and like .050 long from what Brodix supplied. I'd have to check my notes. Combustion chamber is 65.2cc, and intake port was never measured. Brodix claims 240+ as cast so they're obviously bigger than that, but suffer from the 59 degree push rod limitations.

I agree. Its gotta work better than my W2 Econo headed 468ci. Haha. And I am pretty happy with how mine carries up the RPM scale. Cam is very similar to mine, less lift.

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/16/13 01:11 AM

I agree with the " it would like more head " sentiment.
Wouldn't we all ?
But it is going to be a brute I think.
I have a sneaky suspicion that you will need to figure out how to keep in out of the 9's.
Let me know what you find , because I think I'll be facing the same issue.
Posted By: Triple Threat

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/16/13 03:08 AM

BabyB1, I've been called worse.

I don't think it will go 9's, not in my car anyways weighing 34-3500#. In a lighter car absolutely. If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Lenny @ Ultimate is doing a converter for the combo. Should be a good bit faster than it was.

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/16/13 03:21 AM

Something tells me you want it to fast but consistent more than anything. I think you will be fine in both categories.

Dusten, good luck with the new engine, would think you'll be fine being the chaser, should be chasing a lot more often, redlights from 10.5 cars are nice, with your rep you'll be seeing lots of them.

And this is 110% correct. Consistency! Hoping a big broad torque curve will help in that department. Thank you for getting me the crank so quick Rod!

Many people do not understand that we aren't out to set records. We are there to win races..even in stock my wallet says I wouldn't be trying to set records haha. If I had Dustins wallet I'd own that Motorhome on the thread!

Re: My New Bullet; a 454 Small block - 01/16/13 07:25 AM

Yeah he sure seems to have plenty of money. Makes ya wonder why he did not go BB

Hopefully everyone can understand it is about turning on win lights not who is fastest. That is an entirely different animal. I think you will be just fine and where you want to be with the new bullet. Some nice pieces for sure. Be interesting to see what those heads can really do if and when you ever decide to really get after them.

I had Lenny build a converter for my car, wow what a difference in performance. Car ran smoother too due to excellent converter balance, better idle, lower RPMs on the highway, and loads more torque. Lenny is the man.

Good luck with the build. That looks to be a very beastly combo...

Maybe that wasn't directed at you. Now if it said "blazingly fast, predictable, zerox maching of a fat tire car".....well, perhaps!
